Welcome Girl Scout families!

Girl Scout Families,

Welcome to the Spring 2020 edition of Inspire Discovery !

This publication is your insider’s guide to all the new programs, adventurous activities and valuable information exclusively for our Girl Scouts and their families. We guarantee the program opportunities will ignite your girl's love of learning and expand her horizons, while she has the time of her life. For more than a century, Girl Scouts has designed innovative and unrivaled programs to meet girls where they are now—and grow along with them. In 2019, Girl Scouts of the USA introduced 42 new badges curated exclusively for girls in kindergarten through 12th grade. The new programming enables girls to choose how they want to experience and influence the world, while preparing them to address some of society’s most pressing needs through hands-on learning and real-life problem-solving in cybersecurity, coding, space exploration and environmental stewardship. The new programming also includes 18 Coding for Good Badges, which not only teaches girls the basics of coding, but also details every stage of the coding process. Check out our girl programs section of this publication, beginning on pg. 39, to discover opportunities for your Girl Scout to earn one of these new badges this spring. In collaboration with our nearly 200 local Program Collaborators and Partners, thousands of eastern Missouri G.I.R.L. s (Go-getters, Innovators, Risk-takers, Leaders) TM are ready to dive into our newest programs! Spring is also the time for early registration at Girl Scouts. The benefits of early registration are many—including being the first to know about exciting developments and programs at Girl Scouts. And, new for 2021, troops who register early can embark on an unforgettable troop experience to unique locations like Urban Harvest, Marcoot Jersey Creamery and Microsoft. Turn to pgs. 6-7 for all the details and be sure to re-register your Girl Scout on April 1 so she doesn’t miss a minute of the Girl Scouting fun! Spring break options are back in 2020 so girls can work on badge requirements, while relaxing with friends and exploring destinations around St. Louis. Girls will love laughing and learning with their fellow Girl Scouts, and parents will love our stress-free options for their busy schedules!

So, grab a pen and circle the programs that ignite your G.I.R.L. s curiosity, including the St. Louis Aquarium Family Event for those that re-register by April 30. I promise it will be a spring and summer that she will never forget!

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Our G.I.R.L.s are Wowing the World during the 2020 Girl Scout Cookie Program, the largest girl-led entrepreneurial program in the world. Girls tell us the Cookie Program is a special and unique part of their Girl Scout experience, where they have fun being part of a beloved American tradition. When asked what they enjoy the most, girls say it is the social interactions with friends, family and customers. product programs

Throughout the program, girls develop an entrepreneurial spirit as they gain hands- on experience using a host of business and leadership skills. These are skills they will use throughout their lives, including goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. Girl Scout alums tell us the skills they gained during the Cookie Program have benefited them through adulthood.

"My daughter, Hailey, is so excited from GO Day until the very last hour she is trying to sell Girl Scout Cookies. She has a drive to sell as many packages of cookies as possible. Each year she has more passion than before, and as a volunteer and parent I cannot help but do everything in my power to fuel her determination. I hope she never loses that drive in anything she does in life."

WHAT'S NEXT FOR EASTERN MISSOURI COOKIE BOSSES? The first phase of our Cookie Program is done and orders have been submitted, hooray! However, there are many customers still looking for cookies who know they are only available for a limited time each year. With five more weeks remaining in our Cookie season, here are the ways cookie bosses can reach their goals:

Goal Getter forms to take cookie orders from customers Jan. 27-March 8; these forms were provided with the troop’s cookie materials, or can be printed from girlscoutsem.org/cookies .

Troop cookie booths Feb. 14-March 8 will connect eager customers who don’t know a local Girl Scout with their favorite cookies. Girls can hand out adorable Girl Scout Cookie-inspired Valentine’s to customers on Feb. 14; they are available at girlscoutsem.org/cookies .

Neighborhood walkabouts Feb. 17-March 8 where Girl Scouts and an adult go door-to-door with cookies in a wagon.

Digital Cookie provides customers near and far with the convenience of ordering cookies online. Did you know that girls who used Digital Cookie in addition to the order card had average package sales of 188, compared to 116 packages by girls who did not sell online? Check out the three Digital Cookie rewards girls can earn:

Cookie Techie Patch 15+ emails sent

Samoas Keyring 75+ pkgs sold with Digital Cookie

Cookie Scrunchie and Butterfly Metal Charm 100+ pkgs sold with Digital Cookie

Through March 1, online customers can request their order be delivered by a Girl Scout rather than shipped. Customers purchasing cookies as gifts can choose to have them shipped in a special gift box or tin with a message. Online orders for shipping and donation continue through March 8.

CREDIT AND DEBIT PAYMENTS WITH CLOVER

We are excited for all individual Girl Scouts and troops to use the free, secure Clover Go app on their mobile device to accept credit and debit card payments for cookies. This can be during cookie deliveries, as well as through workplace, booth and walkabout sales. There are many benefits—less cash handling, more convenience and more cookies are sold when customers pay with their credit or debit card. WOW!

Ask your Girl Scout's troop leader about using Clover this year and see instructions on the Cookies page at girlscoutsem.org .

from Hawkins might undertake, whether that might be a journey to the upside down, a trip to the arcade or whatever else comes to mind.

Camp Know Where: Rule the Arcade

Harry Potter Kano Coding Kit Workshop

It’s no surprise that the kids in Stranger Things spend a lot of time in the arcade in Hawkins. It’s even where they meet one of their new best friends, Max; she might be the best video game player the town has ever seen! In this camp, attendees will be told Hawkins is putting in a new arcade, and they will get to be the ones to design the games to fill it. First, they need to learn how: students will put a “stranger” twist on the games, design their sprites after characters and creatures from the show, and do so through in-world inspired storylines.

This workshop introduces girls to the foundational concepts of coding. Participants will follow simple steps with drag-and-drop code blocks and create Harry Potter spell motions, magical creatures and artifacts, all with the coding wand and a Surface device.

Create Magical Moments with Photos

Girls discover how to create magical videos including mixed reality and 3D using Photos, one of the exciting new apps included with Windows 10. With Photos, it is easy to turn treasured memories into your own personal videos with music, captions, 3D effects and more. Re-register beginning April 1, 2020! Visit girlscoutsem.org/renew or call the Answer Center at 314.400.4600.

Camp Know Where: Strange-ify Your World

In this troop experience, Girl Scouts use Mixed Reality to insert themselves into the world of Stranger Things . They will be encouraged to create their own creatures for the world and create a story or adventure the kids

Eastern Missouri Girl Scout receives Medal Of Honor In 2019, Girl Scouts of the USA honored local G.I.R.L. , Kaitlyn O’Shea, with the organization’s Medal of Honor after saving her cousin from drowning. The Medal of Honor is a special award given to a girl member who shows presence of mind and true Girl Scout spirit saving a life or attempting to save a life without risk to the awardee's own life. On September 3, 2018, O’Shea’s three-year-old cousin was playing in a residential pool and removed her flotation device without parental approval. After taking a step down in the water, she immediately lost her footing and went under. While adult family members were in attendance, none of them had seen the toddler fall. O’Shea was nearby and immediately jumped into action when she saw her cousin’s body disappear into the water. She quickly swam to her cousin, pulled her to the side of the pool and called for help. Her cousin remained conscious during the ordeal and did not require resuscitation. “I knew I needed to get her and make sure she had oxygen, so I grabbed her,” O’Shea said. “An important lesson from this is that kids who can’t touch the bottom of the pool always need to have a floatie on.”

Girl Scout Robotics

HOW CAN MY GIRL SCOUT GET STARTED WITH ROBOTICS?

Since the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s robotics program began in 2009, it has grown from five teams to 92 teams in 2019. Last year, there were multiple teams at every age level (Jr. FLL, FLL, FTC, FRC), from Daisies through Ambassadors.

Watch for the robotics application in the Girl Scouts e-newsletter this spring and on the website in late April. Complete the application and submit to Lauren Kornegay Dollar at lkornegaydollar@girlscoutsem.org or Denise Sallee at dsallee@girlscoutsem .org. Faxes can be sent to 314.214.3076. You will need two unrelated adults to sign up as coaches and at least three girls to start a team. Only a limited number of teams will be accepted.

The mission of the FIRST® program is to inspire young people to be

science and technology leaders by engaging them in exciting mentor- based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills. The experience also inspires innovation and fosters well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication and leadership. Through participation in robotics programs, Girl Scouts identify ways in which science can help solve a problem in the real world. Girls also learn valuable life and employment skills by coming up with ideas, solving problems and overcoming obstacles. They gain confidence in their abilities to use technology.

Bronze Award

Version B, transparent background Girl Scout Juniors make a difference in the Girl Scout or local community when they work together to achieve the highest honor a Junior can earn— the Girl Scout Bronze Award. Girls will have fun along the way as they bring their own creativity to all they do and discover. Girls earn the Girl Scout Bronze Award by completing a Journey, and then creating a Take Action project based on their observations of a local issue. As the girls pursue their project, they put the Girl Scout Promise and Law into action. They also develop an understanding of sustainability and gain an understanding of the wider world by discussing how others may experience the same problem their project helped resolve.

Version A, white background BOLDLY BRONZE Troop 811 earned their Girl Scout Bronze Award by doing their part to reduce the amount of plastic in landfills, while also creating a safe space for their peers. Girl Scout Juniors Lilly, Eva, Lauren, Olivia, Taylor, Meredith, Addison and Katie learned they could reuse plastic and make it into a buddy bench. These innovative Girl Scouts organized a collection drive at their elementary school where they collected 400 pounds of plastic caps. After sorting all the caps into their respective recyclable number and then cleaning the acceptable lids, they loaded the plastic into their troop leader, Pam Adams' truck. Adams drove the caps to Green Tree Plastics LLC in Evansville, Indiana where she exchanged the caps for a bench. These G.I.R.L. s then gifted the buddy bench to Blades Elementary School where it has been installed by the playground. The buddy bench is a special space for students to sit and let their peers know they are wanting to find a friend to play.

Silver Award

Version A, white background SHINING SILVER Krystina, Kendall, K ia, Cadence and Rhegan from Troop 3708 decided they wanted to have an impact on the environment when choosing their Girl Scout Silver Award project. To earn the Silver Award, the most prestigious community service award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn, these girls took action while finishing up middle school. Through researching the role honeybees play in our ecosystem, they learned honeybees are facing colony collapse in part to human influence. Since the decline of pollinators leads to the decline in healthy foods, these G.I.R.L. s were determined to make a difference. They started by planting a bee-friendly garden in Innsbrook, Missouri. Then, the young change-makers hosted a bee movie and craft night for a local preschool. The girls presented a slideshow on honeybees and their decline, coordinated bee-themed craft tables and showed an animated bee movie for the kids. Thanks to the hard work of these bold leaders, their community is prepared to help these essential insects execute their jobs.

T he Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Cadette can achieve! A Girl Scout team will plan and complete their Silver Award Take Action Project, and will develop more confidence, meet new people, and have the kind of fun that happens when girls work with other Girl Scouts to make a difference in the world. Going for the Girl Scout Silver Award gives girls the chance to show they are a leader who is organized, determined and dedicated to improving their community.

To receive certificates, complete the Milestones Request form online and mail by March 1 to Girl Scouts of Eastern

Seven Steps to the Girl Scout Gold Award:

1. Identify and issue: Girls use their values and skills to choose a community or global issue they care about

Missouri, attn.: Girl Scout Milestone Award. The form can be found at girlscoutsem.org/highestawards .

2. Investigate it thoroughly: Girls use their skills to learn everything they can about the issue they have identified

Contact: Lucretia Penn, 314.592.2337, lpenn@girlscoutsem.org

3. Get help and build your team: Girls form a team to support her efforts and help her take action

4. Create a plan: She identifies the root cause of an issue and then creates a plan to tackle it. This is where a girl may decide to benefit the Girl Scout community, if Girl Scouts or a Girl Scout facility is the most logical beneficiary of the project. That decision should not happen before this step 5. Present your plan and gather feedback: Candidates submit a Project Proposal Form to the Girl Scout Council for approval, clearly identifying how the project will address the issue in a sustainable way

6. Take action: Girls take the lead, manage their team and carry out their plan

7. Educate and inspire: The Gold Award Girl Scout tells her story and shares her results, while ensuring her project will have an lasting impact
