Inspire Discovery Fall 2019

Welcome, Girl Scout Family

Earning Girl Scouts highest community service awards is a remarkable achievement. The Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards are earned by Junior, Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador G . I .R . L .s who display extraordinary leadership while completing sustainable and measurable projects. To encourage our Girl Scouts to pursue these recognitions, we are piloting new Highest Award program fast tracks. The first will be launched in early-fall for girls working toward their Gold Award. Enjoy flipping through Inspire Discovery with the Girl Scout in your life. Spend time identifying programs that pique her interest or encourage her to take a risk and grow. Together, we will help her uncover new passions and follow through on them to accomplish amazing things, both today and in the future. Her next step, powered by Girl Scouts, will help release more of her unstoppable potential! TOGETHER, WE WILL HELP HER UNCOVER NEW PASSIONS AND FOLLOW THROUGH ON THEM TO ACCOMPLISH AMAZING THINGS, BOTH TODAY AND IN THE FUTURE.

Dear Girl Scout Families,

Welcome to the Fall 2019 edition of Inspire Discovery !

At Girl Scouts, she will explore science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), practice entrepreneurialism and have endless opportunities to get outdoors, strengthen her problem-solving skills, make new friendships and overcome challenges so she can create her own success— whatever that looks like to her! In addition to our innovative programs, we know Girl Scouts crave BIG adventures, like traveling! In the last edition of this publication, we mapped out our three-year progressive travel program including field trips girls can take as Daisies and global experiences for our older girls. Our progressive travel program encourages girls to discover the thrills of high adventure through age-appropriate activities and field trips from canoeing the Boundary Waters to exploring the world. This fall, we have even more exciting travel news! A Cookie Program travel coupon is being developed to help offset the cost of Council-led travel experiences for Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors. More details will be available later in the fall, but turn to pg. 25 for a sneak peek at our awesome trips for Summer 2020. I know you will also be inspired by the G . I .R . L .s ( Go-getters , Innovators , Risk-takers , Leaders ) TM featured on pgs. 4-9, many of whom are Gold Award Girl Scouts. These girls live their lives with courage, confidence and character. We are honoring them as our inaugural 18 under 18 Trailblazers . From community advocates and non-profit founders, to cookie bosses and STEM innovators, these Girl Scouts are role models!

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Bonnie Barczykowski CEO, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri

A new Girl Scout Cookie arrives in 2020, Lemon-Ups! This yummy and crisp lemon cookie from our partner, Little Brownie Bakers, is baked with eight inspiring messages. It is sure to be a huge hit with cookie customers. Lemon-Ups replaces Savannah Smiles cookies which have retired. We are counting on all Girl Scouts to be part of our Cookie Confidential Crew and keep the new cookie a secret until it’s national launch on Jan. 7, 2020. Keeping this private until Jan. 7 will help Girl Scouts make a big splash with media coverage and create excitement to promote the start of the 2020 Girl Scout Cookie season with customers. We appreciate your help keeping this secret! Another part of Cookie Confidential is that our Girl Scout Cookie packages will all have a new look in 2020. Though the packages look different, the cookies will have the same great taste everyone knows and loves! Border 1 Green.png

Girl Girl Scout Camp Is For Every G . I . R . L .

At Girl Scout Camp, the adventure is high and the fun is big— really big! Girls try new things and step out of their comfort zone while gaining confidence and independence. It’s where girls make new friends in an environment that is just for them. Camping is a great way for girls to explore their leadership abilities, develop a deep appreciation for nature and build skills hard to gain elsewhere like constructing a campfire, riding a horse, hiking with a compass and shooting an arrow.

At Girl Scout Camp, girls take action and own leadership roles every day. Whether she guides the hike because she knows the way or serves as a mentor to a younger camper, our G . I . R . L .s are confident and responsible!

Through participation in programs like Seasons of Giving and April Showers or by earning the Girl Scout Bronze, Silver or Gold Award, girls are making a difference in their community each day.

Seasons of Giving

Girl Scouts make an impact through Seasons of Giving, which encourages girls to

participate in service activities. Girl Scouts have the option of making gifts, contributing useful items or providing service to agencies of their choosing. Troops can contact their Neighborhood Service Team for more information about service program agencies in

their area or view a list of agencies online at girlscoutsem.org/communityservice.

April Showers

April Showers, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s largest community service program, is important to the Girl Scout program and the community at large. Girl Scouts, their troop leaders, families and friends help people in need by collecting personal care items.

Kits include easy-to-follow plans including tips for discussion starters, supply lists and parent/guardian guides. Brownie kits include an interactive journal for each girl. Upon completion, each girl receives a free patch. Kits will be mailed directly to parents or troop leaders. Highest Awards Bronze. Silver. Gold. These represent the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn. All three awards give girls the chance to do big things while working on an issue that’s captured their interest in a big way.

Gold Award Girl Scouts represent our most successful and engaged—and happiest—Girl Scout alum.

Earning Girl Scouts highest community service awards is a remarkable achievement. The Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards are earned by Junior, Cadette, Senior and Ambassador G . I . R . L . s who display extraordinary leadership while completing sustainable and measurable projects. To encourage our Girl Scouts to pursue these achievements, we are piloting new Highest Award program fast tracks. The first will be launched early-fall for girls working toward their Gold Award.

All that Glitters is Gold

Girl Scout Gold Awardees Molly Frei and Lillian Orskog were each recognized for their leadership and service with $5,000 higher education scholarships at Dessert First in 2019. Molly paved the way for future leaders in STEM by assembling “tinker boxes” for elementary-aged girls with mechanical engineering activities. Molly’s boxes are now at her school, serving as tools to help prepare future female leaders for careers in STEM. For Molly, earning the Gold Award was an opportunity to take charge and grow into a courageous and confident leader, ready to tackle even more challenges! Lilly worked to minimize the staggering food insecurity occurring in Kirksville, Mo., by constructing 25 vegetable and 25 herb garden boxes, providing long-term access to fresh and nutritious foods for individuals in need. Lilly provided all the boxes to low-income individuals and families interested in harvesting their own vegetables and herbs. Because of Lilly, local farmers, non-profits and community members are coming together to ensure residents are receiving the nourishing foods they need to thrive.

Since 1916, Girl Scouts have developed Take Action projects to discover solutions to address the root causes of many community issues. Gold Award projects inspire Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors (grades 9-12) to be innovative through their planning, creativity and engagement of others to make a sustainable impact on the community—local, national or global. These young women identify and investigate issues and take action to create change while educating and inspiring others. After earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, girls join a robust network as they enter their post- high school lives, enabling them to distinguish themselves in the college admission process, earn college scholarships and enter the military one rank higher. Gold Award Boot Camp Want to earn the Gold Award but apprehensive about where to begin? Gold Award Boot Camp will provide the tools needed to identify the root cause to an issue you are passionate about and decide what is a long-term benefit and sustainable support. Attending the Gold Award Boot Camp fulfills the required Gold Award Candidate Training. Learn more at girlscoutsem.org/goldaward .

The Silver Lining Shea, Katie, Eva, Isabella, Natalie and Ellie from Troops 4314 and 3089 decided they wanted to have an impact on the environment and help those less fortunate than themselves when determining their Girl Scout Silver Award project. To earn their Silver Award, the most prestigious community service award for a Girl Scout Cadette, they collected more than 5,000 plastic bags, cut them into plarn (plastic yarn) and then crocheted 10 mats. These G . I . R . L .s learned that the mats can serve as sleeping mats for individuals forced to live outdoors as the plastic material acts as a barrier against the harsh elements. It took several months for the Girl Scouts to create the plarn and crochet all 10 mats but before donating them, the girls wanted to understand what it meant to live without personal hygiene products, clean clothes and shelter. The six girls spent a weekend at Camp Tuckaho with just their mats, a tent and plastic garbage bags. Although the girls missed having a hairbrush or a clean set of clothes, the plastic mat kept them warm in the evenings. Thanks to the hard work of these young change-makers, they generated a positive change in the community.

The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Cadette, grades 6-8, can achieve! Going for the Silver Award gives girls the chance to show that they are a leader who is organized, determined and dedicated to improving their community. This award recognizes girls who identified issues they care about and put their plan into motion, creating a lasting impact. Whether a girl decides to go solo or builds a team— significant changes are being met to solve an issue in their communities. Boldly Bronze

Troop 392 earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award by helping special needs cats’ meow-ving into their fur-ever home. Our bold Girl Scouts, Marissa, Camryn, Ava, Morgan, Mallory, Caroline and Paige helped the staff at Tenth Life Cat Rescue by making adoption bags filled with food, litter, information and coupons. The assembled bags were then used to increase the adoption of special needs cats. Troop 392 learned that their good deeds can have a lasting, positive mark on the world. The Girl Scouts chose to complete their Bronze Award Project with Tenth Life because they are passionate about stopping the unnecessary euthanasia of cats who may have experienced trauma and now face emotional or physical issues. They wanted to help these special cats, who may not have other options, have a new and comfortable life!

Girl Scout Juniors across eastern Missouri are making big changes—when girls in grades 4-5 team up with others and use their amazing skills to take action they make a difference in the world! As the girls pursue their project, they put the Girl Scout Promise and Law into action. Girls develop more confidence, meet new people and have fun. They also deepen their understanding of sustainability and gain an appreciation for diversity and the wider world by discussing how others may experience the same problem that their project helped resolve.
