Fall 2019 Inspire Discovery

October

Offered to: Grades K-5 Love watching the St. Louis Blues win the Stanley Cup in 2019? Want to get a taste of what playing ice hockey is like? Come out and test your skills with the St. Louis Lady Cyclones, the regions only all-girls youth hockey club. All of the equipment will be provided and girls will get a special jersey to keep. Beginner Session: This session is for girls with no or limited ice skating experience. Our players and coaches will work with girls on the ice and make sure that they have a fun experience while getting a taste of what hockey is all about. Intermediate Session: This session is for girls that already have some proficiency at ice skating (for example they can turn both left and right and stop or have significant roller blade experience). For girls with limited skating experience or no experience, please check out our beginner program above. The Lady Cyclones will work with girls in different stations focusing on stick handling, skating, passing and shooting. Girls will be divided into groups according to their age. Location: Centene Community Ice Center, 750 Casino Center Dr., Maryland Heights 63043 Grades 4-5 Learn about the wonders of flowers and uncover the science behind these beauties by dissecting them yourself! Girls walk in the footsteps of an ethnobotanist as they learn about the traditional and medicinal uses of flowers and create a meaningful flower bouquet to take home to a loved one. Girl Scouts will also explore the Missouri Botanical Garden by planting a flower and selecting one to take home! Girl Scout Juniors earn their Flowers Badge. Location: Missouri Botanical Garden, 4344 Shaw Blvd., St. Louis 63110 Grades 2-3 Photo Explorations will work with girls to help them earn their My Best Self Badge through fun and personalized art projects, like creating a photo portrait to represent their unique and special qualities. At the end of the program, girls taste-test new snacks and enjoy activities facilitated by a health professional and learn that living a healthy life includes taking care of our bodies and minds through movement and other skills. Girl Scout Brownies earn their My Best Self Badge. Location: Berges Family Girl Scout Program Center, 2300 Ball Dr., St. Louis 63146 Grades 6-8 Earn the first badge in the new Cadette Cybersecurity series and learn about different hacking techniques and basic cybersecurity precautions. Cadettes discover how (and why it’s important!) to protect themselves with strong passwords, secure encryption and exercise caution when clicking on links. Girl Scout Cadettes earn their Cadette Cybersecurity Basics Badge. Location: Berges Family Girl Scout Program Center, 2300 Ball Dr., St. Louis 63146 Grades 2-5 Roller derby is more than a full-contact sport played on roller skates—it's an empowering community dedicated to self-confidence and inclusion. During this two hour "crash" course, Girl Scouts will learn the rules of the sport from St. Louis derby stars, choose their own derby name and practice putting on bout makeup. Skaters will demonstrate game play and discuss how they stay safe and healthy on and off the track. The program will conclude with an interactive game of sock derby! No skates required.
