Girl Scout Families, Welcome to the spring 2023 issue of Inspire Discovery ! This publication is your insider’s guide to all the upcoming programs, adventurous activities and valuable information developed especially for our Girl Scouts and their families. This is an essential resource for you and your Girl Scout to plan their upcoming adventures this spring and summer—so many awesome opportunities await inside these pages! Does your Brownie Girl Scout love to climb, jump and play? Sign her up for our new Brownie Climbing Adventure on May 7. She will climb to new heights, burn some energy and earn a badge all at the same time! Turn to pg. 56 for all the details. Is your Junior Girl Scout dreaming of a summer getaway? Check out our trip up the mighty Mississippi on our new travel opportunity, Quad Cities Adventure, June 23-24. Girl Scouts will travel by bus and enjoy all the fun kid-friendly sites in this unique bi-state region. Learn more on pg. 61! Is your Cadette, Senior or Ambassador Girl Scout ready to learn more about the college admissions process? On June 16, they can join us for a day trip on our new Visit to Missouri S&T program. They will tour campus, visit academic departments and learn more about the financial aid process. Parents and caregivers are welcome to tag along as well, check it out on pg. 60.

Of course, these are just a few of the engaging and unique programs we are offering girls in the coming months. No matter what spring and summer programs you select, your Girl Scout is sure to have a blast and learn some new skills along the way! Spring is also the time for early bird membership renewal. These benefits of early registration are many—along with some cool Girl Scout swag, your family will be the first to know about new initiatives, camps and programs at Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri for the fall and 2023 school year. Please be sure to re-register your Girl Scout on April 1 and don’t miss a second of the Girl Scouting fun! We are honored to be a part of your Girl Scout’s journey. Girl Scout Round Up 2023

Mark your calendars for Girl Scout Round Up on Saturday, November 4 at Camp Cedarledge!

YES! We have moved this event to a bit later in the fall so we can enjoy some time around the campfire with our Girl Scout friends, both returning girls and new girls who join when school starts.

YES! Registration will open in late summer to help alleviate the stress of registering so early for a program in the fall when schedules can get busy.

YES! You can still camp over the weekend! Sign ups for both the event and camping will open at the same time in late summer.

YES! Girl Scouts will all come together at the same camp and same day this year!

Are you curious about what happens behind the scenes at the Girl Scout Service Center—where do all those cookies get stored, who packs the Daisy Drop Boxes and Live From Girl Scouts program boxes, what is the Emerson Resource Center and can I visit the Girl Scout Shop? Tour the GSEM Service Center!

Beginning March 2023, 30-minute tours of the Service Center will be offered each Tuesday from 4 pm to 6 pm. These tours are conducted by members of the council’s leadership team and provide a tour of the office,

overview of council operations, and an opportunity to learn about the Emerson Resource Center and shop in the Girl Scout Shop.

All participants will receive a commemorative patch, shown on this page and a special Girl Scout Swap.

Please reserve your tour through through gsEvents. Registration for 2023 tours will be open until February 28, 2023. Please register all girls and adults participating. Tours are offered at no cost and are open to all members.

Community Service

Girls who engage in community service develop a strong sense of responsibility for others. Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri provides girls with opportunities to serve, to connect with their communities and to reflect on their experience to better understand themselves, area needs and their role in making the world a better place. Community Service Partners Community Service Partners are organizations looking for Girl Scouts to provide service to their organization. These partners will be listed in future publications and on our website for easy access when your troop is looking to do a service project. Stay tuned to the upcoming newsletters for more information when the Community Service Partner webpage launches. Have you worked with any agencies that regularly need volunteers and would recommend them to your fellow Girl Scouts? Please send your Community Service Partner suggestions to Abby Muir at amuir@girlscoutsem.org for consideration.

All items donated through the online registries will be delivered to our camps. Girls will have the opportunity to assist with counting and sorting items donated through the registries. More information is available in the Troop Participation Guide. All registered Girl Scouts are expected to participate in April Showers through door-to-door distribution, donation collection or Showering the Community. District and Neighborhood Events scheduled for either weekend of April Showers should plan to incorporate April Showers as part of their event plans. Troops camping are expected to participate on the alternate weekend. We encourage families and friends to participate too! April Showers is a great community service project for the whole family. Non-member insurance will be provided by Girl Scouts for family and friends who volunteer for April Showers. Together we can help empower girls to team up and make the world a better place. April Showers 2023 Girl Scouts, their troop leaders, families and friends can help individuals and families in need by participating in Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s largest community service program, April Showers. For 25 years, Girl Scouts, their families and neighbors have collected more than 25 million personal care items. We are excited to be offering the community multiple ways to participate in April Showers. We will again be utilizing online registries in addition to the traditional in-person aspects of the program. Girls will place self-adhesive notes door-to door throughout eastern Missouri the weekend of April 21-23, 2023. The note will encourage households to purchase items and reuse a bag or box of their own for pick up on April 29 or to donate through our online registries which will be available April 21-30. Showering the Community is back for 2023. On April 22, girls will be stationed outside of local stores to encourage customers to purchase additional personal care items for donation.

Girl Scout Robotics

FIRST® Robotics is a progressive program beginning with the FIRST® LEGO League (FLL) levels. Teams then advance to FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC) and FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC). • FLL Discover: grades K-1, 2-8 teammembers • FLL Explore: grades 2-4, 2-6 teammembers • FLL Challenge: grades 4-8, 2-10 teammembers

We encourage our Girl Scouts to become science and technology leaders through participation in the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and SeaPerch Robotics programs. Each teammember gains hands-on STEM experience along with problem-solving, teamwork and other important life skills. Teams follow an innovative curriculum that combines basic engineering and science concepts with an exciting season theme, then show off what they have learned at an end-of-season event. No previous experience is necessary for our participants or coaches. If you have an interest in learning how to build and program, this is an amazing opportunity for you! Teams are led by adult volunteer coaches and mentors. Teams have an opportunity to compete at local and regional tournaments and win prizes.

SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips Girl Scouts with the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). • SeaPerch: grades 2-12, 2-5 teammembers

What would I do on a Robotics team? You can do so many things! As a teammember, you will:

• Learn about designing, building and programming robots with your teammates • Get creative by making team posters and even designing your own shirts • Earn robotics badges and every year, Girl Scouts also receive a special robotics patch How can I get started? Start by asking other girls your age if they are interested in robotics! This could be members of your troop, friends from camp or other girls that you know. They don’t need to be involved in Girl Scouts as long as they become a registered Girl Scout when they join the team. You can learn more by emailing Brooke Stochl, Robotics Program Manager, at bstochl@girlscoutsem.org . How can I learn more? There is more information about the robotics program on our website, girlscoutsem.org/robotics. On our page, we even have a video of our Girl Scouts in action with their very own robots! We also encourage you to join us at the Robotics Showcase or another upcoming Robotics program. This is a great way to get a sneak peek at GSEM Robotics before joining a team.

Medusa Serpentine, FTC #12565

• Medusa Serpentine is a FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC) team from Incarnate Word Academy. • This is their second year competing in FTC! • Their team is made up of 15 Girl Scouts in 9th-12th grades. Team Accomplishments: Medusa Serpentine has been extremely busy this season with community outreach, mentoring other teams, and more! Here are some of the things they’ve been up to: • Medusa Serpentine mentors a FIRST® Global robotics team from Lesotho, Africa. In their weekly peer mentor meetings, they offer guidance, debrief competitions, and discuss robotics with this team from across the world. • In collaboration with the NASA STEM Learning Pathways, Medusa Serpentine prepared and delivered Artemis Rocket Launch STEM Project Kits to 350 students. • In October, they managed an End Period Poverty drive at Incarnate Word Academy collecting items for Epworth Children & Family Services. • Using a 3D printer, Medusa Serpentine made and donated over 100 face shields and mask protectors to first responders in November. In Their Words: What is your favorite part of Girl Scout robotics and FIRST® Tech Challenge? • “This is my second year doing robotics. The first year I was so scared to talk to people. As I’ve grown and learned more, I’ve gotten really confident and am able to talk to people. We do a lot of outreach activities and it’s great to know that people are so nice and like to help. People also give great advice and are really helpful.” – Sophia How do your team, mentors, and coaches support you? • “Our coach always pushes me and it shows me that I can. When I finally achieve it, there is a euphoria of being able to accomplish it. I wouldn’t be able to do it without her!” –Erika How do you envision robotics impacting your life? • “It will help with working better with people because it’s important to work well with others in robotics. I’m also doing something I don’t normally get to do.” – Rebecca What advice would you share with girls interested in robotics? • “Even when you fail or make a mistake, just keep trying. It can usually be fixed. Don’t give up!” – Davonne

We are able to keep the fees reasonable with the amazing support of the Treats & Reads Program, the Girl Scout Cookie Program and donations to our Gifts for Girls Annual Fund. We also offer financial assistance for membership fees, programs, including camp, and uniforms so that ALL girls have access to the full breadth of the Girl Scout experience. This Girl Scout Cookie season, let your customers know that you’re not just a cookie seller—you’re an entrepreneur with goals that you’re ready to accomplish. Girl Scouts already Go Bright Ahead, and the Cookie Program can take you to new heights when you earn Trefoil Rewards!

Selling 280+ packages = One Trefoil Reward Selling 510+ packages = Two Trefoil Rewards Selling 1,000+ packages = Three Trefoil Rewards

How Do Rewards Work? When a Girl Scout earns Trefoil Rewards, she earns a summer program experience, or two or three! Instead of a dollar amount, the Girl Scout gets to choose the eligible program to attend, use it as a program discount, or carry it over to 2024.

They can also be used for a discount toward a program with a higher fee. See examples below.

• A Girl Scout who earns one Trefoil Reward might use it for a Day Camp or one-night camp, or for a 25% discount for a higher-fee summer program.

• A Girl Scout who earns two Trefoil Rewards might use it to attend two Day Camps, one three-day/two-night camp or for 45% off one, higher-fee summer program.

• A Girl Scout who earns three Trefoil Rewards can use it to attend one, week-long Overnight Camp (not to exceed $410) or for 65% off a higher-fee summer program (not to exceed $410). Each eligible program will have a one, two or three Trefoil designation. Let’s see how many Trefoil Rewards you will collect this year!

2023 Trefoil Rewards Eligible Programs

Project Thank You Project Thank You is Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s service project that provides our community the chance to donate treats to one of our nonprofit partners. Each $5 donation will gift one package of cookies to organizations that serve military personnel and veterans, those in need and those who help our community stay safe. Trefoil Rewards Usage • Trefoil Rewards are not gift cards and have no cash value; no remaining balances may be applied to another program or carried over • Programs designated as eligible for Trefoils Rewards in th same level may not ave the exact same fee; they are ch sen if they are within a fee range to allow for more variety of programs to be included • When meeting certain criteria, 2023 Trefoil Rewards may be carried over one year; otherwise they must be used by Sept. 30, 2023; carryover details will be shared in official reward notification Eligibility Our Project Thank You partners are USO of Missouri and Operation Food Search. Last year the community donated 92,906 packages of cookies. In 2022, Girl Scouts across eastern Missouri can help our communities with the gift of cookies, and earn special Project Thank You rewards. • Girl Scouts in reward opt-out troops can earn Trefoil Rewards • Trefoil Rewards may not be transferred to another Girl Scout; financial assistance is available to families with a need • Trefoil Rewards are non-cumulative; they may only be earned at the highest package level achieved Program Registration • Trefoil Rewards-eligible programs will be indicated in 2023 Camp Adventure Guide , Spring 2023 Inspire Discovery and online • Trefoil Rewards do not guarantee a spot in any program; all programs are first-come, first-served • Girl Scouts should register for programs and pay any required deposits when registration opens in December, as programs fill up quickly. Official Trefoil Rewards notification will not go out until late March 2023/early April (Trefoil Rewards will be applied to program balances beginning in April 2023); once applied, this may result in a refund for deposit paid • Trefoil Rewards may not be used for program deposit fees or for events hosted by outside organizations; families must still pay deposit to demonstrate program commitment and secure spot • Families must submit Trefoil Rewards acceptance by deadline stated in the Trefoil Rewards notification communication. This form will notify council of the program or option the Girl Scout wishes to apply their Trefoil Rewards to. Rewards will not be applied to a program without this acceptance and will not carry over automatically

Project Thank You Project Thank You is Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s service project that provides our community the chance to donate treats to one of our nonprofit partners.

Each $5 donation will gift one package of cookies to

organizations that serve military personnel and veterans, those in need and those who help our community stay safe.

Our Project Thank You partners are USO of Missouri and Operation Food Search.

Last year the community donated more than 93,000 packages of cookies. In 2023, Girl Scouts across eastern Missouri can help our communities with the gift of cookies, and earn special Project Thank You rewards.

A shared passion for empowering our next generation of female leaders starts at Girl Scouts. Camp Cedarledge 5-9 week positions available

Internships Positions are available for the full 9-week summer, or for a partial summer internship with 5-week positions negotiable. As a member of the intern camp team, you will receive free housing and meals, as well as professional development training designed to help young adult leaders with the skills they need for the future. Activity Staff Positions Are you looking to join the camp team part-time throughout the year? We are hiring individuals, 18 years and older, as Camp Program Specialists to lead programs year-round with troops at our three camp properties. Training and certification are provided.

Paid staff training starts on June 2, with camp sessions June 11-Aug. 4. Camp staff will live in a camper unit and lead programs for Girl Scouts grades K-12. 2023 Camp Adventure Guide The 2023 Camp Adventure Guide is here and bursting with camp fun! Registration for 2023 summer Resident and Day Camps is now open! As a Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri member, you have access to Overnight, Day and Troop Camp options that offer their own brand of adventure and innovative programming. • Girl Scout Day Camps are an excellent option for first-time campers and busy families. With activities ranging from DIY projects to exploring

the night sky, there is something for everyone! • Girl Scout Overnight Camps are experiences ranging from a few days to a few weeks, offering campers equestrian and specialty camp options. Girl Scouts have an immersive outdoor experience where they learn teamwork, perseverance and self-discovery in an encouraging environment. • Girl Scout Troop Camp is a year-round opportunity for Girl Scouts in troops to experience camping with their friends and leaders. Troops can access everything our camps offer and make the adventure all their own!

Spring 2023 Equestrian Programs Enjoy a unique horseback riding experience at Camp Cedarledge. Located in Pevely, approximately 45 minutes from the Girl Scout Service Center, our equestrian program is run by experienced wranglers who help girls of all levels discover the joy of horses. All programs have a 12-person limit. Troops who exceed the 12-person limit can choose two time slots or contact the Answer Center for assistance in scheduling a program. Adults are welcome to register and ride, but are not required to as wranglers secure ratios on the trail ride (except Pony Tales).

High Adventure Opportunities

Outdoor Adventure Course at Camp Tuckaho Build team spirit, improve communication, inspire ingenuity and develop resourcefulness by participating in a fun and challenging low and high ropes course. In this extraordinary, interactive learning environment, campers are faced with decision-making situations that can be stimulating both mentally and physically as they navigate obstacles both on the ground and in the trees at the Outdoor Adventure Course (OAC).

Troop OAC Challenge Dates: April 1-Oct. 2023 (select weekends) Troops will need a minimum of eight people, girls and/ or adults to participate Prerequisite: Individual OAC or Troop OAC Challenge Registration will open on Feb. 2 in Doubleknot by 10 am and you will register into Cricket Corner 1 or 2.

When troops participate in the Troop OAC Challenge, they build teamwork, develop self-esteem and create memories that last a lifetime! • Available for troops to build teamwork develop self esteem and create memories of a lifetime. • Troops will need a minimum of eight people, girls and/or adults. • All eight people participating must be able to attend the entire program from Friday evening through Sunday morning. • Troops are responsible for ensure that the adult/child ratios are met. • Adult volunteers who accompany their troops are responsible for girls when they are not participating in the program, i.e. meals and rest periods. • Once registration is received, we make every attempt to place troops interested in participating in the OACcourse. • Instructors are contacted immediately and you will be notified about 4 weeks before your date. • Your Lead OAC Instructor will contact your troop prior to your program participation to help you prepare for this adventure.

Climbing Wall and Zipline Get ready for an exhilarating experience at Camp Fiddlecreek! This is the perfect activity for troops looking for a high adventure experience or a unique bonding activity. The climbing wall and zipline are open to any troop or individual Girl Scout. Participants are also welcome to pack a picnic and enjoy the other activities at Camp Fiddlecreek like climbing on the spider net, taking a hike or playing GaGa ball. The climbing wall and zipline are operated by trained facilitators who assist campers on their memorable outing. Participants must climb the wall in order to zipline. Meet the Highest Awards in Girl Scouting

The Girl Scout Gold Award, Silver Award, and Bronze Award prove you’ve got what it takes to build a better today—and tomorrow.

Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts going for the Gold Award are rock stars, role models and real-life heroes in their community. How do they do it? By leading a team of adults and peers to help fix a problem in their community or make a lasting change in their world. You don’t have to be a seasoned activist or star student to get there. We provide training to get you started and mentors to help along the way!

This Girl Scout Bronze Award adventure is big—in fact, this award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. As you and your team plan and complete your project, you’ll de velop more confidence, meet new people, and have the kind of fun that happens when you work with other Girl Scouts to make a difference.

How Girl Scout Juniors Make the World a Better Place

Welcome to the Girl Scout Bronze Award, a leadership adventure for you and more than half a million Girl Scout Juniors across the country and around the world. Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri is extremely proud of our Bronze Award honorees and recognize these ground breakers at the annual Reflections Ceremony held in June each year. Once the girls have completed their Bronze Award Project, the leader will verify requirements have been met and submit the troop’s report online. Projects must be submitted online by March 1 in order to be recognized at that year’s Reflections Ceremony. Projects received after this date will be recognized at the following year’s ceremony.

Outdoor Art Maker: Badge Workshop for Local Daisies

Issue: Girl Scout Daisy troops needed more opportunities to earn badges for their grade level

Bronze Award Team: Troop 1968; 5th grade Juniors; 3 Girl Scouts on award team

Project Details: The troop chose to create a workshop for Daisy Girl Scouts to earn the Outdoor Art Maker Badge. The girls researched the requirements of the badge, planned activities and logistics for the event. On September 17, the troop hosted Daisy Girl Scouts at a workshop for the Outdoor Art Maker Badge. The girls participated in nature themed Pictionary, learned about art history, participated in a nature scavenger hunt, played some games and drew a nature background with chalk that they shared with their parents during a gallery walk. The Daisies had a great time and were very engaged with all of them earning the Outdoor Art Maker badge at the end!

Sustainability: The badge workshop for the Outdoor Art Maker badge was developed and piloted by troop 1968. Future Junior troops could duplicate the workshop and provide the same badge opportunity to more Girl Scout Daisies.

How Girl Scout Cadettes Make the World a Better Place

Have you ever looked around your community and saw something that didn’t seem to work right or was causing concerns? Did you think about things that could be done to improve the issue? Our Cadette Girl Scouts address these problems through earning the Silver Award. Our Silver Award honorees are celebrated by family, friends, volunteers, staff and special guests at the annual Reflections Ceremony held in June each year. Once girls complete their Silver Award Project, they should receive approval from their troop leader before submitting their final project online.
