Welcome,Volunteers!

Dear Girl Scout Volunteers,

Fellow Volunteers,

Happy New Year and welcome to the Spring 2020 Lead & Learn ! As a Girl Scout volunteer, you are truly a change-maker. Through engaging G.I.R.L.s (Go-getters, Innovators, Risk-takers, Leaders) TM in activities that ignite their passions and inspire them to aim for the stars, your mentorship and support help our girls grow into women who advocate for positive change in the world. We are committed to providing you with quality resources, ideas and assistance. On the following pages, you will find great information on engaging online and in-person adult trainings, details for upcoming volunteer event opportunities, and tips and tools for leading a successful troop meeting or unforgettable troop trip. I know you will also find inspiration in your fellow volunteers, featured on the cover and pgs. 8-11. These volunteers live their lives with courage, confidence and character, and we are proud to showcase their extraordinary efforts to reach G.I.R.L. s across our jurisdiction. Thank you for the time, talent and treasure you invest each day and we hope you also take the opportunity in 2020 to invest in yourselves as leaders.

Spring is a time of looking forward to things to come and a refreshment of nature. During this part of the Girl Scout year, we must keep our focus on the girls and how we, as volunteers, can continue to support them as they complete Journeys and badge work, implement plans for Take Action Projects and take the final steps to earn one of Girl Scouting’s Highest Awards: the Bronze, Silver or Gold Award. Training is an important step in the process of girl support. Take the time to look through the courses offered in this edition of Lead & Learn . Take a certification course in camping or archery so your troop can enjoy these activities. Or, perhaps consider becoming a facilitator so even more troops can have these experiences. Renew your commitment to your girls and to Girl Scouts and share your commitment with others so they might follow in your path. I would like to close by saying thank you all for your support and friendship over the past four years. I have met and worked with some amazing, dedicated volunteers and will cherish the memories. I will continue to work hard as a volunteer to deliver quality programming for girls and essential training opportunities for adults. I hope you will Sister Up and continue along with me as we walk the path of leading a legacy.

A Legacy of Leadership No matter how you are involved in Girl Scouts—troop leader, cookie manager or camp supervisor—you’re forever part of an 800,000 member network of passionate Girl Scout volunteers. continually expanding your network as you work with girls, their families and your community, and you build new skills every month as you take on exciting adventures and activities.

Girl Scouts has a long legacy of fostering female change- makers, and preparing its members for lifetimes of leadership, success and adventure. The volunteers across our eastern Missouri jurisdiction provide girls with the leadership experiences they need to make their voices heard and affect change, now and in the future. As a Girl Scout volunteer, you not only serve as a role model to countless young girls, you also discover your own leadership style as your girls discover theirs. You are

The volunteers featured in this issue of Lead & Learn exemplify what it means to be a Girl Scout volunteer. They live their lives with courage, confidence and character, and we are proud to showcase their extraordinary efforts to support G.I.R.L. s across our jurisdiction. Hailing from urban, suburban and rural districts, with unique backgrounds and Girl Scout journeys, these women are forces for good!

District 9 Troop Leader Gloria Contreras

What are you excited about for the future with Girl Scouts?

Gloria: This is our first year as Girl Scout Brownies and I feel like there are so many more activities for the girls. I am excited that we could possibly go camping during summer 2020.

As a volunteer, how has Girl Scouts helped you expand your leadership skills and self-confidence?

Gloria: I recently started a new position with our school district, working in the elementary school. This gives me an additional opportunity to get to know the girls, their backgrounds and their unique personalities. Through Girl Scouts, I’ve learned to build strong relationships with youth. I feel like anything that I’ve been teaching the girls, now I bring back to other students at the school as well.

8 Spring 2020 Lead & Learn

SPRING 2020

District 14 Troop Leader, Troop Organizer, Neighborhood Manager

Heather Pickens-Hollis

What inspired you to become a Girl Scout volunteer?

Heather: I wanted to make sure my girls had the experience that they were looking for, so I decided to become a part of it. My girls knew exactly what they wanted out of Girl Scouting from watching their older sibling and not everybody’s willing to step up and take on that position. I just fell in love with Girl Scouts and I continue to volunteer in different roles.

How has Girl Scouts grown your personal network?

Heather: I have come into contact with so many strong, independent and organized women who have taught me how to run my troop, how to run my neighborhood, and how to get what I want out of the Girl Scout program to ensure my girls have an amazing experience. Some of my closest friends are my fellow leaders. Right now, we live and breathe Girl Scouts in our house, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It is a fantastic opportunity for not only the girls, but for me as well to meet lots of new, interesting people.

District 15 Troop Leader, Neighborhood Manager, National Council Delegate

Melinda Orskog

What inspired you to become a Girl Scout volunteer?

Melinda: My Gold Award Girl Scout daughter inspired me to be a volunteer. It took two years before we were able to connect with a Girl Scout troop in our area and at the time the troop needed a third adult leader in order to cover events. The following year the troop was in danger of dissolving and I stepped forward as leader.

As a volunteer, how has Girl Scouts helped you expand your leadership skills and self-confidence?

Melinda: Girl Scouts has expanded my skills through training opportunities, particularly fire building. However, the biggest area of growth for me personally has been in pushing my boundaries as I encourage girls in their experiences. I am terrified of heights, but when my troop voted to try ziplining, I quietly showed my own trepidation and put on a brave front to coach the girls.

SPRING 2020

District 9 Troop Leader Kynedra Ogunnaike

Why are you proud to say you are a Girl Scout volunteer?

Kynedra: I was a Girl Scout my entire life and I learned so many valuable lessons from Girl Scouts. I immediately knew that when I became a mother that I had to have my girl be a part of Girl Scouting, and also give the opportunity to girls that normally wouldn’t be able to do things such as camping, canoeing and having a powerful voice.

Do you have a favorite Girl Scout memory?

Kynedra: Probably the insane side of Girl Scout volunteering! Recently, I had two groups of girls working on their Girl Scout Bronze Awards at the same time. Balancing two different projects was quite interesting!

District 13 Troop Leader, Troop Organizer, Robotics Leader, Neighborhood Chair

Lisa McCleave

Do you have a favorite Girl Scout memory?

Lisa: I brought my two daughters with me to Troop Camp training. They were six and four years old at the time. It was their first time being at camp and sleeping in a tent. When we woke up the first morning it was 20 degrees outside. They had so much fun with their new friends that they never complained about the cold the entire weekend.

What are you excited about for the future of Girl Scouts?

Lisa: I am excited to watch my daughters and the girls in my troop take on more leadership roles and to eventually earn Girl Scouting’s Highest Awards.

10 Spring 2020 Lead & Learn

SPRING 2020

District 5 Troop Leader, Neighborhood Chair, District Chair, Gold Award Committee, April Showers Coordinator, Council Trainer

Pat Puller

What are you excited about for the future of Girl Scouts?

Pat: I am excited to see our Council increase the number of Girl Scout Gold Awardees and Silver Awardees. Most girls don’t know the benefits that these awards give them in life for school, scholarships and job applications. I am very excited about the increase in awareness.

As a volunteer, how has Girl Scouts helped you expand your leadership skills and self-confidence?

Pat: I was very shy when I started in Girl Scouts as an adult. It gave me the confidence to become a trainer and to be able to express and demonstrate the skills that I have acquired and share those with others.

District 12 Troop Leader, Cookie Manager, Day Camp Volunteer

Megan Dury

What inspired you to become a Girl Scout volunteer?

Megan: My childhood background with Girl Scouts! Also, being with the girls and learning how to camp. These are things I didn’t do with my immediate family, but Girl Scouts has taught me that I can do anything out there in the world. I wanted that experience for my own daughters, so they get to enjoy it as well.

Do you have a favorite Girl Scout memory?

Megan: Every moment is a different memory! Just seeing the girls grow, develop, be in charge and expand what they can do. One of my fondest memories is watching my girls grow at camp. We love camping. In my older girls’ troop we had some Girl Scouts drop out in fifth grade who came back in high school because of all the cool things we were doing at camp!

Making Memorable Moments Some of the most memorable moments in a G.I.R.L. ’s life happen while taking trips. Traveling with her Girl Scout sisters is just another adventure she can embark on while developing skills essential to leadership, to success and to life. Travel is built on a progression of activities—one activity leads to the next. As girls grow in their travel skills and can better manage the planning process, they can progress to longer and more detailed trips. When planning, consider your girls’ abilities to be away from their families and homes, adapt to unfamiliar surroundings and situations, make decisions for themselves and the good of the group, get along with each other and handle challenges, as well as their previous cross-cultural experiences, skills and interests.

Since the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s robotics program began in 2009, it has grown from five teams to 92 teams in 2019! Currently, there were multiple teams at every age level (Jr. FLL, FLL, FTC, FRC), from Daisies through Ambassadors. Girl Scouts of the United States (GSUSA) has partnered with For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST® ) to offer program opportunities around the country in these areas. The mission of the FIRST® program is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills. The experience also inspires innovation and fosters well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication and leadership. Getting Started With Robotics

Through participation in robotics programs, Girl Scouts: • Are confident they can solve real-world problems • Develop awareness of careers in the STEM fields • Develop and apply specific strategies to promote cooperation

• Identify ways in which science can help solve a problem • Learn valuable life and employment skills by solving problems and overcoming obstacles • Gain confidence in their abilities to use technology

ROBOTICS FAQ’S How do I sign up to start a Girl Scout robotics team? Watch for the robotics applications this spring in the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri e-newsletter and on the website in late April. Fill out the application and submit to Lauren Kornegay Dollar at lkornegaydollar@girlscoutsem.org or Denise Sallee at dsallee@girlscoutsem.org . Faxes can be sent to 314.214.3076. Interested groups will need two unrelated adults to sign up as coaches and at least three girls to start a team. Only a limited number of teams will be accepted.

How will I know if we receive funding? The team will receive notification via email in June 2020 if accepted.

When does the season start? Jr. FLL (K-4 th grade) October through March FLL (4 th -8 th grade) August through December FTC (7 th -12 th grade) September through February FRC® (9 th -12 th grade) January through April

This sounds like fun, but I don’t have any programming experience or technology experience. What should I do? It’s okay if you don’t have a background in programming or engineering! Girl Scouts offers comprehensive training in August to teach Jr. FLL® and FLL® rookie coaches how to program the robot, but don’t worry—the girls will pick up the programming aspects really quickly! Feel free to recruit colleagues and friends who are interested in technology to help mentor the team. What if my daughter is interested in being on a team, but no one else in the troop is? Extend the invitation to other girls in her school and community! They don’t need to be previously involved in Girl Scouts as long as they become a registered member when they join the team.

How much does it cost? If accepted for funding, Girl Scouts will cover the major expenses (including the robot, software, field kit and T-shirts). The team will be responsible for a portion of the overall cost. The team registration fee is different for each robotics level.

Enhancements to our 2020 Cookie Program make your troop’s experience through March 8 easier, more convenient and rewarding—now that is wow-worthy!

• Eastern Missouri troops can earn more proceeds than ever, $0.80 - $1 per package sold. This means more new adventures for the girls, so dream big!

• Our troops and individual Girl Scouts are using the secure Clover Go app’s OCR scanner to accept credit and debit card payments when delivering

cookies, at booths and on the go. The benefits are less cash handling for troops and girls, more convenience for customers and increased cookie sales – it’s a win-win. If your troop has not completed the required training and setup, visit girlscoutsem.org/cookies • Empower your Girl Scouts to use the Digital Cookie platform to connect with hungry cookie lovers down the block and across the country. Customers appreciate the convenience of ordering cookies online and girls earn a cute cookie techie patch when they send 15+ emails to customers

• Experiences earned through the Cookie Program – camp, travel, Butterfly Blitz

The girls in our troop have learned so many new things as they worked together to create fun and successful booths over the years. They learned how to use a sewing machine to create their own table cloth, used artistic skills to create posters, used math skills as they made the correct change for customers, learned technology by using Square, created sales goals and helped count our inventory. They discovered more about marketing and worked together to make their table visually appealing. The girls also used their public speaking skills and manners to interact with customers and each other in a polite way. Cookie booths provide a real-life example of how girls can live out the Girl Scout Law every day. It is so much more than just selling cookies! “

Highest Awards

Bronze. Silver. Gold. These represent the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn. All three awards give girls the chance to do big things while working on an issue they care about. Whether they want to plant a community garden at a local school and inspire others to eat healthy for their Bronze, advocate for animal rights for their Silver, or build a career network that encourages girls to become scientists and engineers for their Gold, girls will inspire others (and themselves).

GOLD AWARD SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Dessert First Scholarship

National Gold Award Girl Scout This is the designation given by Girl Scouts of the USA to the top ten Gold Award Girl Scouts in the country each year. A Gold Award Girl Scout earns the title of National Gold Award Girl Scout by implementing an exceedingly awesome Gold Award project—one that reflects extraordinary leadership, has a measurable and sustainable impact, and addresses a local challenge related to a national and/or global issue. Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri can submit three nominations to Girl Scouts of the USA. Girls must use the GoGold Online system to be considered for nomination. The National Gold Award Girl Scouts are then honored at a national ceremony.

Prudential Spirit Award Each year, Prudential Financial offers the Spirit of Community Awards in partnership with the Prudential and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the program honors middle level and high school students for outstanding service to others at the local, state and national level. Girls wishing to apply should visit spirit.prudential.com for application procedures and deadlines. GSUSA has compiled a list of colleges that offer scholarships, awards and grants to Girl Scouts. To utilize this comprehensive database, visit girlscoutsem.org/highestawards .

At Dessert First, Girl Scouts celebrate the leadership and service of two outstanding Girl Scouts by awarding scholarships of $5,000 to be used for higher education. Additional $500 scholarships will be awarded to semi- finalists. Scholarship recipients must be working on, or have completed, their Girl Scout Gold Awards. Awardees are selected through an application and essay process. Applications are available at girlscoutsem.org/DessertFirst .

In 2019, Gold Award Girl Scouts Molly Frei and Lillian Orskog were each recognized for their leadership and service with $5,000 Dessert First higher education scholarships. Each young woman left a long-lasting impact on their community and is responsible for helping solve a real-world need. Molly paved the way for future leaders in STEM by assembling “tinker boxes” for elementary-aged girls featuring mechanical engineering activities. Lilly worked to minimize food insecurity occurring in Kirksville, by constructing vegetable and herb garden boxes, providing long-term access to fresh and nutritious foods for individuals in need. Way to go girls!

Community Service Girls who engage in community service develop a strong sense of responsibility for others. Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri provides girls with opportunities to serve, to connect with their communities and to reflect on their experience to better understand themselves, area needs and their role in making the world a better place. Through programs like Seasons of Giving, Honor Troops and April Showers or by earning a Girl Scout Bronze, Silver or Gold Award, girls are making a difference each day.

Need ideas for community service projects? For a list of agencies and their current needs, visit girlscoutsem.org/communityservice .

April Showers April Showers, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s largest community service program, is important to the Girl Scout program and our community. Girl Scouts, their troop leaders, families and friends help people in need by collecting personal care items.

Seasons of Giving Girl Scouts make an impact through Seasons of Giving, which encourages girls to participate in service activities. Girl Scouts have the option of making gifts, contributing useful items or providing service to agencies of their choosing. Troops can contact their Neighborhood Service Team for more information about service program agencies in their area or view a list of agencies online at girlscoutsem.org/communityservice .

To our April Showers supporters,

In the interest of the health and safety of our Girl Scouts and supporters during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri has made the decision to cancel April Showers, our annual personal care collection drive. This includes the following events: • Neighborhood “sticky note” drop-off ( Date to be announced ), • Showering the Community, personal care item drives at select retailers ( Date to be announced ), and • Neighborhood bag (donation) pick up ( Date to be announced ). Community service is a hallmark of Girl Scouting, and we are committed to providing service opportunities for our girls in the future. We will make a decision about rescheduling April Showers by early-May.

Appreciation for their contributions are expressed in many ways and showing appreciation for volunteers is essential. Adult Awards provide a means to nominate deserving individuals. These awards range from local Neighborhood and District awards to Council awards, which are presented at the annual Recognitions Ceremony. Please see below for event details. Changes have been made to the Adult Award program this year to streamline the process and make it more accessible. Visit girlscoutsem.org/adultrecognition for more information.
