Volunteer Spotlight

CAROLYN PICKLE, DISTRICT 12

Are you a go-getter, innovator, risk-taker or leader and why? Go-getter because I keep trying to accomplish new things. I work toward a goal and stay with it until it is accomplished. Whether it is coming up with ideas for events or trying to get an adult or girl involved, I keep working on it. What is your best advice for new troop leaders or volunteers? My best advice for new volunteers is to take any training that will help you in your Girl Scout role. Face-to-face or online, take the training! It will help you and help girls and other adults along the way. If your role is made easier, you will enjoy it more. When I am not volunteering for Girl Scouts, you can find me...? Spending time with my husband (Michael), just tooling around. We love road trips and since both of our children have homes of their own and Michael is retired, we jump in the car and head out somewhere. It could just be going to a new restaurant or setting out on another Route 66 trip. We have fun no matter what. What is your favorite Girl Scout resource? My favorite resource is all the other Girl Scout volunteers. It could be an experienced volunteer telling you how she or he accomplished something with their troop or that brand new volunteer that has fresh ideas about ways to do something. I always tell new volunteers to attend face-to-face meetings, neighborhood meetings and events, you will learn at least one new thing every time. Can you share one of your cherished Girl Scout memories? One of my favorite memories is being in the grocery store and a little girl comes running up to me and said “You’re the sno-cone lady!” She gave me a big hug and proceeded to tell her mom about the sno-cone that I made for her. I make the sno-cones at two different Girl Scout Day Camps during the summer and she remembered me from that small role of just fixing a sno-cone for her. A small job, but HUGE rewards!
