It’s time to press play.

Girl Scout Families,

I am incredibly grateful that you have chosen to spend the 2021-2022 school year as a part of Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri. In today’s complicated world, we are an essential force in girls’ lives. We are a vital experience that grows and expands alongside them as they get older, discover the world around them and realize their dreams. To help girls explore their unfound ambitions, Girl Scouts released 28 new badges that focus on entrepreneurship, math in nature and digital leadership that embolden girls to navigate a changing society. Amid seismic shifts in technology and culture brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Girl Scouts can now earn badges—in addition to the hundreds of existing badges—that address girls’ evolving interest in ways that resonate with them. The badges also address some of parents’ top concerns for their children as they handle the increasingly digital world, helping girls build confidence and safe practices online. Turn to pg. 7 to learn more!

To provide our girls with ample opportunities to discover new passions and connect with their peers, we will be offering in-person programming at the Berges Family Girl Scout Program Center. Before attending a program this fall, please visit girlscoutsem.org/covid19 to view our current COVID-19 Response Guidelines. For families who prefer virtual options, we will be continuing our popular Live from Girl Scouts program series, where girls can earn many of the new Girl Scout badges from home. Turn to pg. 11 to find out all the details on this unique series. This fall, whether they are making a new friend, using their STEM skills to solve a problem, or discovering the power of spreading kindness, all of their actions within Girl Scouts add up to a better world for us all. It’s time to press play on a new year!

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Bonnie Barczykowski, CEO

New Badges Embolden Girls to Navigate and Succeed in a Changing World

They’re here: 28 new ways for Girl Scouts of all ages to explore their world, whether online or unplugged! The newest class of badges take on even more topics that Girl Scouts and their families care about, like getting outside, using technology to run girls’ cookie businesses and growing girls’ digital leadership skills to make the world a better place. Earning the badges is also easier than ever: based on feedback from girls, volunteers and families, the new badge booklets now include a volunteer guide and printable activity pages for girls, as well as new badge overviews in the Volunteer Toolkit and fun and fast badge introductions in gsLearn. The new Girl Scout badges include: Math in Nature (grades K–5): Despite increased remote learning, not all learning happens indoors. This badge gets girls outdoors to explore and conserve the natural world as they learn math concepts. Cookie Business (grades K–12): With businesses shifting their models and relying even more on technology, girls learn to think beyond the storefront. The new Cookie Business badges help girls think like entrepreneurs as they run their own cookie businesses and incorporate online sales via the Digital Cookie® platform. Digital Leadership (grades K–12): Digital well-being is here to stay. Girl Scouts explore what a leader is, both online and in their everyday lives. They learn how to be online in a responsible and safe way, and dive into topics like managing your well-being online, how to balance your time on and offline, and how to deal with issues like misinformation, clickbait and biases in advertising.

Together, Girl Scouts Make a Difference Girls who engage in community service develop a strong sense of responsibility for others. Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri provides girls with opportunities to serve, to connect with their communities and to reflect on their experience to better understand themselves, area needs and their role in making the world a better place. Community Service Partners Coming in 2022, GSEM will highlight community service agencies that are looking for Girl Scout troops to provide service to their organization. These partners will be listed in future publications and on our website for easy access when your troop is looking to do a service project. Have you worked with any agencies that regularly need volunteers and would recommend them to your fellow Girl Scouts? Please send your Community Service Partner suggestions to Heather Eyster at heyster@girlscoutsem.org for consideration. I like to participate in April Showers because it makes my heart happy to help others in need. - Skylar, Girl Scout Junior

April Showers April Showers, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s largest community service program is important to the Girl Scout program and the community at large. Girl Scouts, their troop leaders, families and friends help people in need by collecting personal care items that are distributed to agencies throughout our jurisdiction. Hello! I’m Juliette Bowbot and this is my dog Patches.

We’ve been part of the robotics program at Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri since I was in Kindergarten! You can be a part of a robotics team at every Girl Scout level, from Daisies through Ambassadors. Through robotics, we’ve learned how to design, build and program LEGO robots. Once I’m in 7th grade, we can even work with metal robots! Girls on our robotics teams learn more about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through fun, exciting hands-on activities. • Learn about designing, building and programming robots with your teammates • Get creative by making a team poster and even designing your own shirts • Earn robotics badges—every year, girls also receive a special robotics patch How can I get started? Start by asking other girls your age if they are interested in robotics! This could be members of your troop, friends from camp or other girls that you know. They don’t need to be involved in Girl Scouts as long as they become a registered Girl Scout when they join the team. You can learn more by emailing Miss Lauren at lkornegaydollar@girlscoutsem.org or Miss Brooke at bstochl@girlscoutsem.org . How can I learn more? There is more information about the robotics program on our website, girlscoutsem.org/robotics . On our page, we even have a video of our Girl Scouts in action with their very own robots! What would I do on a Robotics team? You can do so many things! As a teammember, you will

We are proud of all of our Robotics teams and the fearless team members who put their leadership education to the test with each robotics masterpiece they create. The FIRST LEGO League (grades 4-8) project challenges are guided by a real- world, scientific theme. The 2019-2020 theme of City Shaper challenged its players to work together to address architectural designs that could improve the welfare of the immediate community. Team Robo Girls took on the issues of safety in their parks in the evening. Robo Girls researched glow-in-the- dark paint that can be applied to running/walking trails allowing for improved visibility. The team has recently submitted a proposal to their City Council for the implementation of this paint.

Q: What you love about building the next generation of female leaders? A: I love that the girls I work with will grow up Lauren KornegayDollar

knowing they are capable, that they can problem- solve, code and give presentations with the best of them. Q: What is your favorite program and why? A: Robotics Showcase! I love seeing the robotics girls get to share their team experiences with other Girl Scouts and their families.

Brooke Stochl

Q: Why do you choose Girl Scouts?

A: I choose Girl Scouts because I want to help the next generation of female leaders develop important skills while still having fun along the way.

Q: What are you excited about this fall? A: I’m looking forward to bringing robotics to even more girls. I’ll be kicking off my first robotics season as a Program Manager and I’m really excited to work with all of my teams and coaches. Plus, we are hosting new girl programs to offer more designing, building and programming robot opportunities for Girl Scouts!

Striving for Greatness When starting your journey to earn one of Girl Scouts’ Highest Awards, selecting a project can be daunting! But, whatever issue you choose, you will change the world and inspire others (and yourself!) Read on to get inspiration from some of our recent Highest Awardees.

Protecting Pets - Troop 325 To earn their Bronze Award, Troop 325 worked together to make a positive change for the pets in their community. After researching different ideas for their project, the girls noticed little free libraries and food pantries, but not a resource for pet supplies. So, Lillian, Ansleigh, Chloe, Leah, Delaney, Matilda, Josie, Penelope, Kiera, Sophia, Allison, Lily, Izzy and Maya decided to build four pet food pantries. The girls designed the pantries and then led a team to construct their plans. Next, the girls purchased pet supplies using their troop funds and collected donated supplies, including two pallets of food from Purina. The new pet food pantries are placed around the St. Louis region for the community to obtain quality pet supplies.

Celebrating Differences - Troop 325 Rylee, Natalie, Haylie, Zoe, Jayla and Savannah of Troop 4601 decided to take action and make a difference in their community to earn their Bronze Award. After witnessing discrimination against themselves and their peers because of their race and ethnicity, these young change-makers organized an international festival to celebrate cultural differences and educate the community. The girls researched, planned and executed the event, including a special opening ceremony. During the event, the girls invited other troops to choose a country to represent and host a booth. These leaders created an environment to celebrate their differences and gain a better understanding of their peers.

A Love of Learning - Troop 9187 After the pandemic disrupted the school year, Kate decided to build an outdoor classroom to allow students to gather safely and continue learning. Kate began her Silver Award by researching the use, set up and expenses of outdoor classrooms. She then met with the school to discuss their needs and finalize her plans. Next, Kate led a team of volunteers to build six benches that convert into picnic tables. She also purchased Adirondack chairs. Finally, Kate arranged for the school to lay gravel in the dedicated space, and she finished setting up the outdoor classroom. Kate also created a slideshow and shared her presentation with other local schools to implement their outdoor classroom.

Providing Access to All - Lauren Sheets As a lifelong Girl Scout, Lauren understood the value of a good education and access to unlimited resources. So, to earn her Gold Award, Lauren decided to take action and help those around the world who did not have the same opportunities. Lauren began by collecting books to be donated to a small school in Burma. After the global outbreak of COVID-19, Lauren adjusted her plans by creating an online library for students to access until she could ship the books overseas. Lauren then passed on contacts and instructions to the community service club at her school, which will continue to donate books.

STEM Trailblazer - Sabrina Baggstrom To earn her Gold Award, Sabrina decided to pave the way for future female leaders in STEM to combat the lack of women in STEM-related careers. Sabrina researched, planned and executed two workshops for 35 elementary students to teach girls coding. During her two lessons, Sabrina taught computer programming and website design to 3rd-5th grade girls. Sabrina prepared the curriculum, created step-by-step worksheets and designed an example website to share with her students. After the workshops, Sabrina provided her materials with the Girls Engaged in Math and Science Club faculty to continue her lessons in the future.

Ally Roehl, the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri Highest Awards Manager, is here to support girls earning their Girl Scout Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards. Read on to get to know Ally, a lifelong Girl Scout and Gold Awardee, a little better! Meet Our Highest Award ProgramManager Q: What are your favorite hobbies? A: Reading, camping, swimming and volunteering at animal shelters. I’m also very into crafts and DIY. Q: Why do you choose Girl Scouts? A: Girl Scouts did a lot for me growing up. I was super shy and introverted, but I attended Girl Scout programs and camp and it helped me come out of my shell. Some of my closest friends I met from Girl Scouts, both as a girl member and now as an employee.

Q: Were you a Girl Scout growing up? If so, for how long? A: I joined as a Daisy when I was five and have been with Girl Scouts ever since. I was an adult volunteer and Troop Leader before I joined Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri as an employee. Q: What is your favorite program to lead and why? A: Aerial Silks was one of my favorites. Many of the girls didn’t think they’d be able to do it and were so excited when they succeeded!
