Welcome,Volunteers!

Dear Girl Scout Volunteers,

Fellow Volunteers,

Welcome to a new Girl Scout year and another edition of Lead & Learn ! In 2019, we embarked on our second century of Girl Scouts in eastern Missouri. Our longevity and success are made possible because of volunteers like each of you who believe in the power and impact of Girl Scouts. We are committed to ensuring every G . I . R . L . ( Go-getter , Innovator , Risk-taker and Leader ) TM in our region has the opportunity to join Girl Scouts. When a girl joins Girl Scouts she is introduced to experiences and opportunities relevant for today, enabling her to push beyond the impossible. Girl Scouts is the great connector, helping girls bridge the leadership gap as they journey into adulthood. Together, we are making great strides and Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri is here to support you each step of the way. Our future has never been brighter! Thank you for your continued commitment to our eastern Missouri Girl Scouts. You are preparing our G . I . R . L .s for a lifetime of leadership, adventure and success.

Welcome to the 2020 Girl Scout year! This is an exciting time to be a part of our organization with a mission focused on building girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. The only way to develop our future leaders is to develop adult volunteers with those same important principles. This is accomplished by providing great resources, phenomenal trainings and access to an amazing network of fellow volunteers. Today’s leaders and assistant leaders have access to a vast amount of program materials through the Emerson Resource Center, Girl Guides and Journey books for every grade level, the Volunteer Toolkit, and of course, Marvelous Mentoring. All of these tools play an important role in building successful leaders, but none of them will ever take the place of face-to-face training and networking. Lead & Learn is an excellent avenue to find workshops and trainings for building your confidence. These courses are led by volunteers, just like you, who have lots of knowledge and experience to share and will have answers to many of your concerns. Every troop is part of a robust Neighborhood full of volunteers that want to see you succeed. Plant your roots firmly in your Neighborhood, attend the meetings and programs they have to offer, get involved and get your girls involved. None of us can do this alone, but together, we can help girls do amazing things.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Bonnie Barczykowski, CEO

Sister Up,

Gail Meyer, Volunteer Field Committee Chair

Spotted!

FALL 2019

G . I . R . L .s doing BIG things in their local communities! Way to go!

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri Brownie Troop 2502 had a great time visiting with paramedics at Station 10 in Cottleville. They made first aid kits for their families, took a tour, learned about a possible future career and tested out some of the equipment!

Girl Scout Troops 1707 and 1601 built a drop-off box for Helping Hand Me Downs, a non-profit located in House Springs. This local organization supplies infants and young children with free clothing and diapers. These community-minded Girl Scouts wanted to further their important mission, so they worked tirelessly to set up a lasting collection service for Helping Hand Me Downs.

These Girl Scout Juniors from Troop 141 knew they wanted to complete a project for Pond Elementary School for their Bronze Award. They hoped their project would not only promote exercise, but provide a place to foster friendships that last forever. As a result, a Gaga Pit was created, turning their envisioned space for students into reality!

FALL 2019

Volunteer Voices

“As my troop of girls gets older, they are continuously looking for new and exciting challenges. In order to bring new experiences to my troop, I knew getting ready to take them camping would be a great opportunity. My favorite training was the one I did to become camp certified. It was a session that allowed me to bring my daughter to experience what camp is all about while I learned all I need to take my troop camping. The troop and I look forward to our first camping experience in the Fall of 2019.” Danielle Reynolds, District 2

“My favorite Girl Scout training I’ve ever taken was Troop Camp A-Z. I have a wonderful group of girls that love the outdoors and this training prepared me for adventures at our Council’s camps...but it did so much more than that! I made new friends with some amazing fellow volunteers, expanded my knowledge in outdoor cooking and increased my love for camping! It was a fantastic weekend!” Karisa Grimshaw, District 17

FALL 2019

Hey, volunteers! We want to hear from you! What is your favorite Girl Scout volunteer training you have taken and why?

“I grew up camping and consider myself an experienced camper so my favorite trainings are outdoor certifications that allow me to help girls experience the outdoors, such as archery, basic water rescue, canoeing and OAC. However, my favorite training ever was Troop Camp with a Twist. This training provided me with both the classroom and “at camp” hands-on experience allowing me to confidently take my troop camping at any GSEM property; enabling the girls to learn outdoor skills and learn to enjoy what the outdoor experience offers. The best part about this training was that my daughter was able to come to camp with me and have a program with older Girl Scouts while I participated in the training.” Kimberly Cottle, District 4

“My favorite Girl Scout training was Troop Camp training. I had experienced instructors and a great bunch of leaders to work with. Despite some adverse weather during our training and waking up to snow in the morning, I really felt well prepared to take my troop camping. I appreciated the hands-on approach the trainers used and the fact that we participated in a weekend at camp, just like our girls would. I have camped many times since then and am always grateful that I had such a thorough camp training.” Linda Lindberg, District 8

RECOGNIZE THE ADULTS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF G . I . R . L .S Volunteer Recognitions

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri places a high value on recognizing the adults who make a difference in girls’ lives. Recognition is given to acknowledge outstanding service. People volunteer for countless reasons, but underneath it all most volunteers are motivated by the quality of their service and the people they serve. When volunteers know their time and energy are appreciated and they are valued by Girl Scouts, they commit themselves even more to the organization and the mission of building girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. Adult recognition can be one of the most powerful tools for retaining the invaluable women and men who volunteer for our organization! Reference the chart on this page to learn about the different types of Girl Scout volunteer recognitions. Each spring, Council-level recognitions are presented at the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri Volunteer Recognition Ceremony.

FORMS OF RECOGNITION Recognition comes in many forms throughout the year. • Thank You: Everyone should get one! Informal recognitions, like thank you’s, should be used throughout the year. A thank you could include a greeting card, note or certificate (certificate can be secured by Girl Scout staff) • Special Thank You: These are reserved for a job well done. A special thank you could include a bouquet of flowers, small gift or a cake • Service Awards: Service Awards are given for years of service with the organization. These honorees are recognized at the annual Volunteer Recognitions Ceremony • Adult Recognitions: Adult Recognitions are given for outstanding service that leaves a lasting legacy or impact. These honorees are recognized at the annual Volunteer Recognitions Ceremony Want to learn more? Visit girlscoutsem.org/volunteer and click Volunteer Resources from the side bar.

Community Service

Girls who engage in community service develop a strong sense of responsibility for others. Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri provides girls with opportunities to serve, to connect with their communities and to reflect on their experience to better understand themselves, area needs and their role in making the world a better place. Through participation in programs like Seasons of Giving and April Showers or by earning the Girl Scout Bronze, Silver or Gold Award, girls are making a difference in their community each day. troop Activity Help girls understand the impact they can make through their participation in April Showers by introducing one of the activities below at your next meeting: • Ask girls to imagine what life would be like without toilet paper, shampoo and toothbrushes. These items are important not only for cleanliness and good health, but for positive self-esteem and sense of well-being • Ask each of your girls to choose five of their favorite personal care items. Then, tell them they cannot use those five items for one entire day. Afterwards, engage in a discussion about their experiences, good and bad. While small in comparison to those who have little to call their own, this activity will help girls relate to the thousands of Missourians who go without personal care items every day

Seasons of Giving Girl Scouts make an impact through Seasons of Giving, which encourages girls to participate in service activities. Girl Scouts have the option of making gifts, contributing useful items or providing service to agencies of their choosing. Troops can contact their Neighborhood Service Team for more information about service program agencies in their area or view a list of agencies online at girlscoutsem.org/communityservice. April Showers April Showers, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s largest community service program, is important to the Girl Scout program and the community at large. Girl Scouts, their troop leaders, families and friends help people in need by collecting personal care items.

ACTIVITY STAFF WEEKEND UPDATE

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri is committed to providing troops with opportunities to experience all that camp has to offer by providing certified staff on select weekends each month. Supervisors will no longer be responsible for scheduling troops for activities. Troops will be sent a link from the Camp Department to sign up for activities two months in advance of their camping date. They will be given one month to sign up for activities, choosing up to two activities. After one month, the sign-up link will become inactive, and a report will be pulled to determine any discrepancies (grade level not appropriate, troops signed up for too many activities, etc.) Once the schedule is finalized, the report will be sent to the camp supervisor three weeks before the camping weekend. Camp supervisors will then pass along the information to the troops camping for the weekend.

Girl Scout Planned Giving HER LEGACY. YOUR FUTURE. A planned gift can be as simple as designating Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri in a will or as a life insurance beneficiary. Every planned gift makes a difference, no matter the size. Individuals who make a planned gift to Girl Scouts also receive induction into the National Girl Scouts Juliette Gordon Low Society of donors. To learn more about planned giving opportunities for Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, please contact Chief Development Officer, Amy Leipholtz, at 314.592.2365 or aleipholtz@girlscoutsem.org. I would ask a fellow volunteer to think about what Girl Scouts has done for them, their daughter or their grandchildren. You can truly help ensure Girl Scouts continues for future generations. Planned gifts, such as bequests or charitable trusts can be an advantageous way to provide a future gift for Girl Scouts—and leave an enduring legacy.

What is the Women’s Leadership Network? St. Louis’ Premier Women’s Network The Women’s Leadership Network provides women of courage, confidence and character with a connection to Girl Scouts and each other. Together, they give their time, talent and treasure to developing our future generation of women leaders.
