GSEM Silver Award Project Catalog
Girl Scout Hygiene Baskets
Silver Award Team: Troop 3878
Issue: Some students are unable to afford personal hygiene items. Root Cause: Poverty and a lack of access leads to being without hygiene products.
Project Details: To provide personal hygiene products for their peers at school, Cadettes from Troop 3878 created baskets to go in their school bathrooms to earn their Girl Scout Silver Award. The baskets included products such as deodorant wipes, floss picks, and lip balm, among other essential items. The Girl Scouts wanted to ensure the success of their project so they received donations and raised funds to maintain the kits for the next four years. In addition to the kits, these young leaders spread awareness of the suicide hotline, 988, to help those who might be struggling with their mental health.
Target Audience: Maplewood Richmond students.
Sustainability: The Cadettes raised enough funds to support the kits for four years and have connected with school organizations that will help continue to supply and run the kit program once the Girl Scouts leave the school.
Hats and Scarves
Issue: Kids couldn’t enjoy the outdoors and numerous learning opportunities because of the cold weather and lack of appropriate clothing. Root Cause: Gear for cold weather is often costly, and clothing in general can be too expensive to afford. Target Audience: The people that visited the Parkway school pantry, the North County ECC, and students of the Wentzville SSD. Sustainability: The Cadettes educated fourth and fifth graders how to sew, so they can make projects for future donations.
Silver Award Team: Troop 682
Project Details: The Girl Scouts recognized that many children were not properly dressed when participating in outdoor learning opportunities. To earn their Girl Scout Silver Award, Cadettes from Troop 682 created hats and scarves for children to stay warm outside during the winter. After finishing sewing all the new warm clothing items, the Cadettes donated the hats and scarves to several schools for children to use when the weather gets cold. They also taught younger Girl Scouts how to sew so they can continue the project in the future.
