GSEM Silver Award Project Catalog

Loom Knitting for Local Charities

Project Details: Knowing that the winter months are hard on homeless individuals, Cadettes from Troop 4782 decided to create loom-knit hats and scarves to go to people in need to earn their Girl Scout Silver Award. The Girl Scouts began by researching local charities and teaching themselves how to loom-knit. After completing all the new winter items, the Girl Scouts brought the hats and scarves to local organizations to hand out. These young changemakers wanted to encourage other community members to make winter gear for those in need, so the Cadettes made project kits. The kits contained a loom, instructions, the necessary tools, and a DVD tutorial video. Once the kits were assembled, they provided the kits to several community organizations and Girl Scout troops.

Silver Award Team: Troop 4782

Issue: During the winter, homeless individuals are unable to provide themselves with the necessities required to survive. Root Cause: The rising cost of houses and the lowering of compensation results in homelessness.

Target Audience: Homeless members of the community.

Sustainability: The kits, placed around the community, and with charity organizations such as the Kindness Project, allow individuals outside of the Girl Scout troop to continue making winter gear.
