GSEM Bronze Award Project Catalog
Increasing Socialization Amongst Seniors
Project Details: After visiting Mason Pointe Living Center,
Bronze Award Team: Troop 2432
Girl Scouts from Troop 2432 learned that those living in the memory care unit often do not receive many visitors. So, they decided to arrange another visit and create meaningful connections to earn the Girl Scout Bronze Award. The Girl Scouts organized a “revue”, where each Junior planned to perform a special talent for the residents at the living center. These talents included, singing, acting out skits, and playing instruments. After their revue, the Juniors led the residents in a group Girl Scout song sing along. In addition to their performance, the Girl Scouts interviewed the residents so they could write up their answers and give them as a gift. The troop exchanged contact information so they could become pen pals with the residents and continue sending them notes and crafts to foster a connection with those who might be feeling lonely.
Issue: Senior citizens who experience dementia or other cognitive impairments often need outreach and connections after feeling isolated from their loved ones. Root Cause: There is a lack of opportunities for senior citizens to feel connected to their community, and conversely for the community, especially children, to see and interact with senior citizens due to health and sanitary concerns. Target Audience: Senior citizens with dementia and other mental impairments living at assisted living facilities.
