GSEM Robotics Team Spotlight: Pacific Puppies Meet one of Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s outstanding robotics teams, the Pacific Puppies. This FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) Explore team consists of 3rd grade Girl Scout Brownies who are guided by head coach, Cassie Morr, and assistant coach, Connie Haley. Alice H., Ellie K., Kaitlyn M., Sydney R., and Kayla Z., have become science and technology leaders, gaining hands-on STEM experience along with problem solving and leadership skills. Using the fundamentals of engineering, these Girl Scouts are working together to model and code using LEGO® bricks. Throughout the season, these young leaders built a trash collector robot programmed to scoop trash from the ocean floor. Their build included a swing connected to a barge. Once the swing filled the barge with trash, the barge lifted to slide the trash onto a boat. This innovative project earned them the Coding

Award at the FIRST® LEGO® League Explore Festival in 2025!

“The coding we used was word blocks, but most teams used picture

blocks,” said Alice H. “We didn’t want a full rotation for our swing, so we had to use word blocks because it lets you do degrees of rotation. We learned a lot about coding and trial and error figuring out how many degrees to turn the swing.” The Pacific Puppies are excited for the upcoming Robotics season and wanted to share some advice with new teams. “Take your time and don’t try to rush it,” said Ellie K. “Ask your teammates to help when you’re out of ideas to solve a problem.”
