Plastic Sleeping Mats for Homeless
Issue: Reducing disposable plastic waste while also helping the homeless community.
Project Details: The Cadettes came together to use their unique talents to address both plastic pollution and home lessness in our community. They learned to make plarn—yarn made from plastic bags. They used the plarn to crochet sleeping mats that could be used by the homeless community. Churches on the Street organization received the donated mats to distribute to those in need.
Silver Award Team: Troop 755; 8th grade Cadettes; 4 Girl Scouts on award team
Sustainability: The girls assembled six kits containing plastic bags, samples of plarn, a crochet hook, and instructions on both making plarn and how-to-crochet. Three kits were donated to Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri council and three were donated to Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois council to help other girls get started on their own plarn mat making projects
to continue to help the homeless communities.
