Archery
Picture this: A Girl Scout places an arrow onto a bow, hooks their fingers around the string, draws it back, aims at the target and releases! Bullseye! Archery is an exciting sport that takes strength and focus. Volunteers can challenge themselves as they build their archery skills and share their knowledge with others. This section describes the USA Archery Level 1 and Level 2 Instructor courses and how to renew them, and outlines the USA Archery procedures for course registration.
Certification for Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s archery program is provided through USA Archery. USA Archery offers Level 1 and Level 2 Instructor courses in a blended learning format. Volunteers complete the knowledge portion of the course on the USA Archery website prior to completing the in-person skills session at a GSEM camp archery range. Registration for USA Archery Level 1 or Level 2 The registration process for USA Archery Level 1 or Level 2 Instructor courses begins by registering for an in-person practical skills session in gsLearn. Registrants then pay for and complete the online portion of the Level 1 or Level 2 Instructor course on the USA Archery website. Detailed registration instructions for each course will be emailed to participants immediately after they register in gsLearn. Please contact Adult Education if registrants do not receive this email.
To successfully complete the requirements for USA Archery Instructor, volunteers must:
1. Register for an in-person practical skills session in gsLearn 2. Create a USA Archery account on the USA Archery website, then pay for and complete the USA Archery Instructor Certification online course and exam 3. Go to the USA Archery website and register for the in-person skills session after passing the online exam. This will be the same session already registered for in gsLearn 4. Complete the in-person skills session held at one of our camp properties USA Archery Level 1 or Level 2 Instructor Renewal Certifications that have not expired may be renewed via USA Archery’s online renewal course. Level: Brownie-Ambassador
Course Description: The USA Archery Level 2 Instructor certification course provides participants with the necessary tools to serve as the lead instructor for long-term archery programs such as Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD), Adult Archery and Collegiate Archery Program clubs, and the Explore Archery Program. To complete the requirements for this certification, students must successfully pass the USA Archery Level 2 Instructor certification online course, including the online exam, and register for and complete the Level 2 Instructor in-person skills session. In addition to passing the online course, instructors must complete the U.S. Center for SafeSport training (online), possess a current USA Archery Background Screening, and hold a current USA Archery or National Field Archery Association membership. The USA Archery Level 2 Instructor certification online course includes the Level 1 Instructor course information. It introduces students to the National Training System (NTS) Steps of Shooting for recurve and compound bows, equipment and accessory setup, athlete development, and events.
USA Archery Level 1 Instructor certification is NOT a prerequisite for this course.
Girl Scouts 18 years and older are welcome to participate. This USA Archery certification is valid for three years and is renewable online through USA Archery via the USA Archery Level 2 Renewal course in gsLearn.
USA Archery Level 2 Instructor certification is required to become a USA Archery instructor trainer for GSEM. Slingshot Instructor Training
Level: All

Learn how to bring the fun of slingshots to Girl Scouts in this two-hour, in-person course. Because of this, participants must possess a current USA Archery Level 1 or Level 2 Instructor certification to lead a slingshot activity at our camps. Slingshot Instructor Training results in a course completion rather than a certification and is renewable every three years. Proof of current archery certification and current slingshot training must be shown to the camp supervisor when using the equipment and range for a slingshot activity or program.
Prerequisite: Current USA Archery Level 1 or Level 2 Instructor certification (no exceptions).

If a Girl Scout wants an in-depth look at what it takes to earn the Gold Award, the Go For Gold workshop might be right for them instead (see Inspire Discovery for details as this workshop is solely for girls). Go For Gold provides an opportunity for Seniors and Ambassadors to meet Gold Award committee members, hear from prior Gold Award earners, network with other Girl Scouts, and spend time brainstorming and researching options for their project.

First Aid, CPR and Mental Wellness
Emergencies require prompt action and quick judgment to ensure the safety of our members. Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri offers first aid, CPR and mental wellness courses through the American Red Cross, the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, and GSUSA. At least one qualified general first aider with an Adult and Pediatric First Aid, CPR/AED certification must accompany a troop when they participate in certain activities. Consult Safety Activity Checkpoints to see if a first aider is required for a troop activity.
Adult volunteers may complete this course through the American Red Cross or another council-approved agency, such as the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI).
Some courses offered by ARC, AHA, or ASHI have separate First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications. All three are required to be a Girl Scout general first aider, and there must be an in-person skills assessment component (no online-only courses).
Be on the lookout for this icon to know which courses offer certifications
