I MY HEALTH Silver Award Girl Scout: Nadia, Girl Scout Cadette

Root Cause: Only 49% of Americans can correctly identify heart disease as the number one cause of death.

Issue: Heart disease

Sustainability: The website will remain active and available to community members of all ages.

remains the leading cause of death in the United States.

To earn the Girl Scout Silver Award, Nadia created an educational website designed to raise awareness about heart disease and prevention for people of all ages. Nadia chose her Silver Award topic after learning her grandmother did not realized she had experienced her first heart attack until she was hospitalized for her second one. Nadia’s project aims to close that knowledge gap by making heart health information clear, accessible, and easy to understand. To make sure her website would resonate with a wide audience, Nadia gathered feedback from multiple generations throughout the development process, including her grandmother (65+), parents and aunts (40s–50s), friends (teens), and her preteen sister. She also consulted her aunt, Alicia, a nurse administrator at a major hospital in Austin, Texas, who has nearly 20 years of nursing experience. Her website includes information about how the heart works, signs and symptoms of heart disease, prevention tips, lifestyle recommendations, and fun facts—all presented in an engaging, easy-to-read format.
