SEED BOMBS FOR NATURE TO GROW Bronze Award Team: Troop 4007 Elizabeth, Grace, Selena, Maya, Aubrey and Chloe

Inspired by the season’s growth and the urgent need to protect local ecosystems, these Girl Scouts tackled a critical issue: the decline of native Missouri pollinators and the loss of biodiversity caused by invasive species, habitat fragmentation, and soil erosion. After researching environmental challenges, the troop united around a shared goal. Through collaboration, research, and creativity, the Juniors learned about native pollinator plants and their essential role in supporting wildlife and food systems. Their solution was both simple and impactful. Troop 4007 created “seed bombs,” small, ready to-toss bundles of soil and native seeds designed to grow pollinator-friendly plants. These seed bombs were packaged and distributed throughout the community, making it easy for others to take part in restoring local habitats. The troop also produced an educational video to raise awareness about the environmental challenges facing pollinators and to teach others how to create their own seed bombs.

Issue: A decline of Missouri pollinators and loss of biodiversity.

Root Cause: An increase of invasive species, isolated habitats and soil erosion.

Sustainability: The project extended beyond hands-on action. The troop also produced an educational video to raise awareness about the environmental challenges facing pollinators and to teach others how to create their own seed bombs.
