All Girls, Everywhere

Ruth Martin Girl Scout Junior

Girl Scouts of the USA and Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri honored fifth grade Girl Scout, Ruth Martin, with the organization’s Medal of Honor after she jumped into action to assist a fellow student who was choking during lunch period. Ruth was enjoying her school lunch with her friends when one of her classmates, and a fellow Girl Scout, began to cough and put her hands to her throat, signaling that she was choking. Ruth jumped into action and administered the abdominal thrust maneuver while another student called for a teacher’s assistance. Ruth’s quick action saved her friend that day when she showed presence of mind and true Girl Scout spirit in an emergency. The Girl Scout Medal of Honor is reserved for Girl Scouts who have performed heroic acts beyond the degree of maturity and training to be expected of their age.

Legacy Jackson Girl Scout Senior

Bronze Award: Troop 9178 Girl Scout Juniors

In October 2023, Legacy Jackson, a then freshman at Cardinal Ritter College Prep Academy, was the first teen in Missouri to present a TedTalk as part of the TEDxSt. Louis Women Two Steps Forward event. Legacy, a 10-year Girl Scout, spoke on how her service organization, Little Legacies, is impacting the St. Louis area, developing young change makers and teaching area youth how to have fun with a purpose. Legacy is a proud Bronze, Silver and Gold Awardee, the highest awards achievable by a Girl Scout. Currently, Legacy serves on the National Girl Scouts Advisory Board which works with the national office on key projects and initiatives aligned with our national strategy, including program, girl engagement, DEI/RJ, research, marketing and more.

After learning that the City of Kirksville was looking for ways to promote recycling, Katie Barhorst, Avery Carriker, Olivia Leaton, Kaylena Mahurin, Emma McFadden, Kadence Selby and Ayiana Smelcer decided to educate their community on the importance of recycling to earn their Girl Scout Bronze Award. These young changemakers began by researching the recycling process and visiting a local recycling center to better understand the issue. Then, they wrote and filmed a short skit to demonstrate what can and cannot be recycled and posted the video to YouTube. They also created a presentation and flyer to share during local community events. The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest Honor a Girl Scout Junior, girls in 4th and 5th grade can achieve. It requires girls to identify a need in their community and dedicate more than 20 hours toward solving the issue.

Troop 992 Girl Scout Ambassadors

JoElle Rogers Girl Scout Brownie

Girl Scouts Ma’Lai Ellis and Shelby Winston had the opportunity to welcome home veterans who participated in Greater St. Louis Honor Flight’s 107th mission. Ma’lai and Shelby led the parade honoring the veterans as they came through Lambert International Airport. “My favorite part of the event was leading the parade with the banner and being able to personally meet and hear some of the stories they shared with us as we welcomed them back home,” said Ma’lai. Greater St. Louis Honor Flight is a non-profit organization who transports senior veterans to Washington , D.C. to experience the memorials built in their honor.

JoElle Rogers, a Girl Scout Brownie, wrote and published her own book, JoJo’s Split Decision , about a young girl named JoJo and how she is navigating life through changing family dynamics. JoElle was inspired to share her own story so that others going through similar situations can learn how to handle change and find happiness. “My story is about finding the courage to accept change and knowing that love can look different, but it never disappears,” said JoElle. In 2024, JoElle participated in a public book signing at the St. Louis County Library Jamestown Bluff branch. Her book is also available for purchase on Amazon. JoElle is a member of the Community Troop Program, a program that provides Girl Scout staff members as troop leaders for numerous troops in schools, churches and community centers to girls who otherwise would not have the opportunity to be Girl Scouts.

The Fruity Loops Robotics Team Girl Scout Cadettes and Seniors

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri Robotics team, The Fruity Loops, eight Girl Scouts from grades 6th through 10th, competed in the Missouri Kansas FIRST ® Tech Challenge Championship in Rolla, MO. The Fruity Loops advanced to the championships after winning robot alliance at the St. Louis North League Tournament in their first season working with metal robots. Throughout the FIRST ® Robotics season, The Fruity Loops learned the importance of perseverance as they made the leap from building LEGO ® robots to programming with metal and 3D-printed parts. The Fruity Loops previously competed in the FIRST ® LEGO ® League Challenge Championship. The Fruity Loops also had the opportunity to speak on the impact competing in robotics competitions has had on them. They gave a presentation at the WICT Tech It Out Conference to women professionals in media, telecommunications and technology.

4 2024 Impact Report

Dear Girl Scout Community, As we look back on this past year, we are filled with pride and gratitude for all that we have accomplished together at Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri. In every corner of our council, spanning more than 300 miles and 28 counties, girls have shown incredible courage, confidence, and character—living out our mission and making a meaningful impact in their communities. In a world that continues to challenge and change, our Girl Scouts have remained steadfast. They’ve led service projects, explored STEM and the outdoors, stood up for causes they believe in, and grown into thoughtful, capable leaders. Whether earning skill-building badges, attending camp at one of our three beautiful properties, selling cookies to their friends and neighbors, or uplifting their communities with Gold Award projects, our girls are not just participating— they’re leading. None of this would be possible without the passionate commitment of our supporters, donors, volunteers, families, and staff. Thanks to you, we’ve expanded access to life-changing programs, strengthened community partnerships, and ensured that every girl—regardless of background— has the opportunity to thrive in Girl Scouting. We are also proud of the work we’ve done to create a more inclusive and equitable experience for all members of our council through holistic programs, post-secondary support, career exploration and vital resources to support personal growth. This work champions every girl’s potential and fuels her persistence toward lifelong success. By investing in girls today, we are cultivating the changemakers, innovators, and leaders of tomorrow. As we move forward, we are energized by the future and grounded in our legacy. Together, we are building a generation of leaders who are prepared, passionate, and driven to make the world a better place.

We are Girl Scouts From kindergarten to high school, each level of Girl Scouts is unique with a wide variety of activities to try. As a Girl Scout progresses, every level builds upon the last and allows them to explore their interests in a way that is meaningful—and age-appropriate—to them. Supported by adult volunteers and mentors right here in our community, Girl Scouts lead the way as they discover who they are and how they can make the future a brighter place. They explore their strengths, take on new challenges, and can always be themselves, regardless of background or ability.

Grand Opening of the New Edward Jones Adventure Center Girl Scout members, staff and supporters gathered to celebrate the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the new Edward Jones Adventure Center on Sunday, April 21, made possible through the generosity of Edward Jones in their support of the Her Future is Our Future Comprehensive Campaign. The Edward Jones Adventure Center, located at Camp Tuckaho in Troy, Missouri, was a two-part project, involving the creation of a new High Ropes Challenge Course, as well as an Adventure Center with free play structures, so Girl Scouts of all ages can enjoy a self propelled and unique play experience. The first phase of the project was completed in 2021, with the installation of the new High Ropes Challenge Course, which gives Girl Scouts in middle school and high school an opportunity to have fun and share thrilling outdoor experiences with girls from across the area. For more than 40 years, the high ropes challenge course has been an iconic team building and leadership Girl Scout program for girls ages 12 through 18. The second phase of the project was the development and construction of the Edward Jones Adventure Center, a self-directed free play experience where girls of all ages can use their imaginations in the outdoors—while building confidence and immersing themselves in physical play like climbing, jumping, and swinging. Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri is incredibly grateful for the support of Edward Jones. Edward Jones truly embodies a community mindset, and their commitment is evident through their long-standing support of local organizations, like Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri. -Dr. Natissia Small, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri CEO “ ”
