Spring 2026 Lead & Learn

Small Craft Safety: Sailing with Basic Water Rescue

Level: Junior-Ambassador

Course Description: Volunteers who complete this blended-learning course that incorporates Basic Water Rescue may serve as the primary or secondary trained waterfront personnel required to open a GSEM camp lake and supervise a sailing activity at any of our properties. Participants will learn GSEM waterfront policies and specialized skills to manage a small sailboat during a lake sailing activity on or off GSEM property, including sailing terminology, points of sail, how to rig and maneuver a sailboat, how to manage a boat in high and low winds and what to do in the event of capsizing. The online portion must be completed in gsLearn before attending the in-person skills session. This course is renewable every three years. Girl Scouts 16 years and older are welcome to participate. Scholarships are available. The in-person skills session at a camp lake requires strenuous physical activity, including capsizing, emptying and reboarding a small sailboat while wearing a life jacket. Practicing these skills may result in minor scratches or bruises. Note: There is a two-to-three-hour break between the in-person Basic Water Rescue and Small Craft Safety: Sailing skills sessions to accommodate participants who are also completing the Small Craft Safety: Canoeing in-person skills session, which occurs on the same day.
