Basic Water Rescue

Course Description: Volunteers who complete this blended-learning course may serve as the secondary trained waterfront personnel required to assist in opening a GSEM camp lake and overseeing small craft activities. Participants will learn how to prevent, recognize and respond to many types of aquatic emergencies, as well as self-rescue and non-swimming rescues for aquatic emergencies. They will also be introduced to the GSEM Waterfront Manual, which outlines the waterfront Emergency Action Plan and waterfront policies and procedures specific to our camps. The online portion must be completed in gsLearn before attending the in person skills session. This course is renewable every three years. Girl Scouts 16 years and older are welcome to participate. Scholarships are available. Basic Water Rescue is bundled with Small Craft Safety: Canoeing and Small Craft Safety: Sailing for convenient registration. Only register for this course below if you are not planning on taking Small Craft Safety: Canoeing or Small Craft Safety: Sailing on the session date.

Lifeguard In-Service Training

Level: All

Course Description: This course is required annually for volunteers and staff certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding who wish to lifeguard at GSEM camps. The course consists of a quiz that will require knowledge of the policies, procedures, and emergency action plans for council-owned pools and lakes. See prerequisites to prepare for the course.

Prerequisites: Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification and thoroughly reading the GSEM Waterfront and Pool Manuals.
