Air Bee N Bee Silver Award Project

Organization Benefiting: Webster Groves Park and Recreation

Issue Addressed: Our issue addressed the native pollinators to our community. After doing research, we found that native bees’ numbers are declining, and we wanted to help. Our bee boxes benefit

Plan and Reason for Project: The well being of bees as a species links all the way up the food chain to us. Bees as well as many other pollinators are nearly fundamental to many plants, which in turn support the food chain that we and our environment rely on. As bees are severely endangered, our troop decided we could try to make a difference by educating our community and building sustainable bee boxes that the native bees can use. We used 8”x 8” rounds from fallen tree branches around our neighborhoods, drilled the according sized tunnels for the bees, and came up with two designs to fasten them in gardens. We made many posters and informational signs that we put up in various places around our town, such as the library and parks, to educate and raise awareness on the topic. our community because we are able to educate others and support gardens and native plants, and our project also benefits native pollinators, because it gives them a place to stay warm and store food over winter.
