GSEM Gold Award Project Catalog

Giving Back to the Vets

Issue: Veterans needs, with an emphasis on those of women veterans, are often underrepresented and supported. Root Cause: Local veterans often don’t have the ability to provide for themselves with things such as food and hygiene products, and many people are unaware of their need for support. Measurability: Mabry used a survey and a tally of the amount of people she talked to gage how successful her project was. Sustainability: Women of Today, DAV, and the Food Bank will help run the project.

Gold Award Girl Scout: Mabry E., Troop 9190

Project Details: Concerned about local female veterans’ abilities to access the food and hygiene products they need, Mabry partnered with the St. Louis Food Bank and Disabled American Veterans to provide feminine hygiene products free of charge. Mabry worked with various local groups to collect $3,000 worth of personal care items for donation to three VA hospitals across the state. Through several media interviews, Mabry spread awareness about her project and the need for continued contributions. She also continues volunteering at various veteran’s events to learn more about the issues affecting our female veterans.

American Legion Post 312 Improvements

Issue: The stage in the Bingo room was falling down, making bingo unplayable, which is the Post’s largest revenue earner.

Silver Award Team: Elizabeth N., Troop 1166

Project Details: To honor her father’s military service, Elizabeth dedicated her Gold Award project to helping the St. Charles American Legion Post 312 make improvements to their facility. She reframed their hall stage by replacing the flooring with new lumber and updated the stage’s electrical components and data feed for their Bingo console. She also updated the landscaping surrounding the front flagpole at the legion. The legion members will benefit from the new upgraded stage and a more modern appearance which will allow members to host additional events, generating more revenue for the organization.

Root Cause: Water damage caused the stage to fall.

Measurability: A monthly discussion at the legion helped Elizabeth measure the impact of her project. Sustainability: The Maintenance Committee will help sustain the project.
