2026 Reflections Program

SHELBY WINSTON

To earn the Girl Scout Gold Award, Shelby's project aimed to honor the historical legacy of Cold Water Cemetery. Over time, critical historical records, burial maps, and care instructions for the cemetery were at risk of being lost, outdated, or inconsistently passed along. Recognizing this need, Shelby developed a sustainable, technology-driven solution to ensure the cemetery’s history is preserved and accessible for generations to come. Shelby organized multiple clean-up days at the cemetery, helping remove debris and restore the grounds where 32 veterans are laid to rest. A key component of her project was introducing modern mapping and digital tools. Using a high-accuracy GPS receiver and ESRI Field Maps, she created a detailed, up-to-date digital map of cemetery interments. Each headstone was documented with photographs and accompanying notes, improving accuracy and readability. Shelby also developed “Links to Legacy: A Digital Guide,” a web-based resource connected to the cemetery’s website. Through QR codes placed within the experience, visitors can access information about veterans and learn about the history of those buried at the site. The sustainability of Shelby’s project is ensured through her partnership with the Missouri State Society Daughters of the American Revolution to update the digital map as new veteran interments occur and ensuring the information remains accurate and accessible for generations to come.
