GSEM Robotics Team Spotlight: The Fruity Loops Meet one of our outstanding GSEM Robotics Teams, The Fruity Loops. This FIRST LEGO League Challenge team consists of eight Girl implanted medical devices such as deep brain stimulators that treat movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease.

Scouts in grades 4th through 8th who are guided by head coach, Mike Larrabee, and assistant coaches, Laura Larrabee and Julia Vollmer. In spring 2023, The Fruity Loops qualified for the FIRST Championship in Houston, Texas by earning the First Place Robot Performance Award and the First Place Champion’s Award at the Missouri Championship. To earn the First Place Champion’s Award, The Fruity Loops had to score the highest across four categories: robot games, robot design, core values and an innovation project. Their innovation project, “Power Sleeve,” uses an array of thermoelectric generators to convert body heat into electricity. This electricity is then used to wirelessly charge batteries of
At the FIRST Championship, The Fruity Loops were one of 108 teams from 45 nations that competed at the FLL Challenge World Festival; they placed 26th in the robot game with a score of 375, in the top 25 percent of teams, and of course, they impressed judges with their robot design and fully functional Power Sleeve innovation project prototype. We are thrilled to have this team moving up to the FIRST Tech Challenge program this season and can’t wait to see what they can do!
