Helping Kids and Teens with Mental Health Illness

Silver Award Team: Troop 1639; Azaria Spearman and Mikayla Woods

Issue:

Their project addressed mental health for teens and kids, and centered towards ways they could cope during hard times.

Root Cause: During the pandemic, the mental health of kids and teens was impacted due to them being isolated at home and having little socialization.

Project Details: The goal of their project was to educate middle school teens on coping techniques and activities that can give them control over their mind, body and soul. These techniques and activities can also positively impact their mental health. With their project we created a simple website that gave access to different resources kids could use to ease their stress and anxiety. Some of the topics their website explored were yoga, meditation, baking, etc.

Sustainability: A writing station was set up in the school café so students could make kindness notecards. The kindness box with cards is located outside of the campus ministry office, and students are encouraged to pick up a card if they are having a bad day or need a kind message.

They created a mental health awareness day for the middle

school. Flyers were distributed from NAMI (National Alliance on Mental

Illness) that discussed mental health statistics and available resources.
