Craft/Activity Kits for Children in the Hospital

2023-2024 | take action

Bronze Award Team: Troop 3756; nine 5th grade Juniors

Issue: Being in the hospital can sometimes be scary and the days are long. Troop 3756 wanted to provide a little bit of fun and creativity for kids during their hospital stay.

Root Cause: One of their Girl Scouts has a sister who was in the hospital for an appendectomy. She said that the hospital gave her little bags of crafts and activities made by volunteers. The projects were a good distraction and helped pass the time while recovering. They also found out that the hospital’s supply of craft kits and activity bags was running very low. Sustainability: Troop 3756 shared their Bronze Award project and craft/ activity kit ideas during our neighborhood troop show case. They even had one kit available for Girl Scouts to make when they visited the booth—pool noodle fish! The girls wanted to show troops that they can easily make craft/activity kits at their meetings!

Project Details: Each Girl Scout researched kit ideas, made a list of supplies needed and spent two extra meetings a month prepping bags, adding materials and writing directions. Each kit included instructions and all the materials needed to complete the craft or play the game. Some examples of kits the Girl Scouts made are mini eraser tic tac toe, beaded lizards, yarn turtles, pom pom launchers, craft stick airplanes, pipe cleaner bunnies, pipe cleaner ninjas, dream catchers, clothespin caterpillars and friendship bracelet looms—just to name a few. They were able to make over 1,200 craft/activity kits and deliver them to Mercy Hospital.
